15 month old babies show racial bias

Maybe society needs to stop using hateful terms such as racist and bigot.

http://www.dailymail.co.uk/sciencet...acial-bias-picking-playmates-study-found.html

  • Researchers found infants favored playmates showing bias to their race
  • Study by Frontiers in Psychology distributed toys to 40 white babies
  • Infants showed preference for supervisor who divided toys unequally

'We know that by preschool, children show in-group bias concerning race, but results in infants have been mixed.

Professor Jessica Sommerville of the University of Washington said: ‘If all babies care about is fairness, then they would always pick the fair distributor, but we’re also seeing that they’re interested in consequences for their own group members.’

There is mindset that children are blind to race, and racism is a learned behavior. With studies like this can we honestly say racism is a learned behavior?

Some forms of racism such as violence towards certain groups are learned. If someone can learn violent racism, they can unlearn it as well.

On a side note this might explain why so many people dislike gays. Gays are not in our group so people show a natural bias towards them.

The main question I have, where is the dividing line between in-group bias and racism?

Looks like kids need to go straight from the womb to sensitivity training.

It's not that surprising to be honest.

I disagree about gays though. Firstly, its not physically evident if someone is gay or not. So it's impossible to tell at first glance, unlike skin colour. Secondly, most straight people I know actually don't care.

15 month old babies hit each other and take toys from other children without asking. Probably should make violence and stealing legal now.

This is easily solved by having rotating nannies of all the races. This probably simply has to do with exposure towards the particular features of that race.

well there you go, babies prefer playmates who look like them. totally justifies adults being bigots and actively being hateful toward and discriminating against other people.

Holy crap, really? I was wondering how long until someone blew the OP out of proportion.

Nobody said discrimination was ok.

No, but somebody did say that terms like racist and bigot were hateful. Not sure who would say something like that and jerk off to the negative responses it solicited, but there you go.

Do you always have to make comments on gays which is completely irrelevant to the subject matter in the study?

I really have to wonder if you're incapable of understanding why you get so much grief in here from the threads you start or comments you make.

LOL

Personally I'm calling shens. I do not believe that infants have any concept of fairness.
That's the point I think. They don't know what fairness is which is why they don't care about it. Infants as young as 6 months have been shown to approve of violence against puppets that don't like the same snack food that they do.

Yep, clearly the only solution is to have all babes raised by government with no human contact except with nannies in sleestak costumes, thereby eliminating racism.

If children exhibit in-group bias at an early age, words such as racist and bigot are hurtful.

Are you going to tell an 18 month old or 2 year old they are a racist?

So the conclusion is racists act like 15 month old babies??

You don't need an experiment to know babies react to things different from them. If 15 kids have black hair just met a blond hair kid for the first time they will likely react by treating blond kid differently.

Once the 15 black haired kids are exposed and interact to more blond kids it ceases to become a big deal.

Let me know when you find more experiments you can use to justify excusing racism.

There isn't any. It is a negative trait that can be corrected like any other negative behavior if addressed early. If you were raised by ignorant parents that encouraged rather than discouraged this type of behavior then it is probably too late for you, unless you are smart enough to overcome the brainwashing as you mature.

Can we say the same thing about gays? Can we address their behavior early?

Or is your bigotry selective?

Who are we to say the behavior of one group is acceptable, but the behavior of another group is not acceptable?

Being gay isn't a negative behavior. It doesn't affect anyone else negatively. Being a racist often affects other people negatively.

There isn't any. It is a negative trait that can be corrected...

Class warfare speaks loudly against this. Though it has competition for resources involved to prevent "correction". What about people who don't use drugs, do we need to prevent group bias between them and drug addicts? It appears we are left with picking and choosing which group biases to condemn while maintaining others.

Although that may not be the point here. Geo was attacked by many while speaking of our natural biases. "I don't care what race people are" was the snap response to him, but not the natural response. It takes correction, as you put it, to eliminate that group bias.

Something to consider, this is just a point to demonstrate tribalism even against all the denial. And maybe we should address it properly by recognizing it as a natural trait. Facing the truth may help us correct it.

TH is using this article as justification that it's cool for him to be sexist/racist/homophobic... Because I mean, if a 15 month old can be a racist, then it's totally natural and Okay.

You blew it out of proportion with this statement:

On a side note this might explain why so many people dislike gays. Gays are not in our group so people show a natural bias towards them.

Why does everything have to be about homosexuality with you? 😕

The problem isn't acknowledging it as a natural trait. The problem is using that as some sort of excuse to justify the behavior. I would say people who discriminate against drug addicts are ignorant, too.

There's a difference between natural and okay. We must recognize the truth of the challenges we face.
