Many times I passed him going 90-100mph and by the time he turned around I was GONE. Long straight country roads are awesome to be screaming down. Like I said young and dumb.

That was before they invented "radio", right?

Obviously you can't read. ONE COP. Radio doesn't mean squat if you have no one to call. The local yokel's not going to call the State Highway patrol for one guy speeding.

I see. I missed this part,

The Honda Civic had been customized with racing accessories including a special engine, seatbelt and car doors that lifted up, Klare said. Champ told police he had plans to race the car at Portland International Raceway.

I guess its broken in now. :D

What the f*cking hell do the latter two have to do with racing? :p

And if he'd spent a few bucks on some light killswitches, he might have gotten away. ;)

The trooper clocked a 1992 Honda Civic headed north at 138 mph. Then the car sped up. A second reading locked in at 142 mph.............

A true Fast and Furious disciple. I bet the Honda is sweet looking :). By the way, he is going to the county jail for a few days I bet.

My car isn't an arrow, but it's no brick either. Turning off the governor for me is as simple as unplugging the Vehicle Speed Sensor.

That's effectively what the "key trick" does. I don't know who had the balls to try this one out first, but here's how it works. (atleast on Gen 3 Dodge Dakotas...) When the key is turned to the start position, the computer ignores a number of sensors, the speed sensor is one of them. When not in park or neutral (auto), or when the clutch is not pressed down (manual), the starter will not engage. So turning the key will allow you to accelerate through the speed limiter. It doesn't take a genius to figure out the downside/upside to this.

Sounds like a good idea ;)

American drivers are way too speed obsessed. The German autobahns, with no speed limits, are statiscally safer than US freeways with their strict speed limits. This is because Germany focuses less on speed as the cause of auto collisions and more on the REAL causes, like poor driver education, poorly maintained vehicles, and truly unsafe driving practices like tailgating and poor lane discipline.

I'm more concerned about the fact that he had a suspended license with no insurance.

I agree 100%, but I still can't believe he was clocked @ 142 on I-205. If the article is correct, the trooper saw him somewhere around Sunnyside/Johnson Creek, and he exited at Foster. It's been a while since I was over there, but the last time I was, there was construction going on in that area. Not exactly the best road surface to try to more than double the speed limit.

I live westside, but last time I was that way (a couple of weeks ago I think) the construction in that area had been finished and the road surface was ideal -- fresh, smooth asphalt.
I'm not condoning what he did (hell, I'm shocked a Civic could even do that... must have been the scissor doors ;):p ), I just don't think it's as big a deal as people are making it out to be. I'm more concerned about people like the idiot I saw cause an accident on the 217 on Tuesday, cutting off another driver without looking or signalling. I see that kind of sh!t everyday (it seems like no one signals anymore), and it bothers me a lot more than some idiot who decides to open it up on an empty freeway late at night.

True, I'm guilty of doing the same thing (not in an urban area though, I didn't get that fast). And I see the same thing every time I drive on 26 (fellow westsider). Someday, maybe the focus will be on unsafe driving, no matter what the speed.

Yeah, it's things like that that almost make me wish you had to insert a valid, non-suspended driver's license to start your car.

Almost.

But driving on a suspended license should carry KILLER penalties, and it doesn't.

Sweet! Wonder if he was driving blind though (without a good radar detector).

I'm a habitual speeder, but I try to keep it at 85MPH or less. 100+ is crazy.

That's where I live, no construction on the highway..

If he blazed past here at 140MPH, I heard him. :D

Oregon traffic cops are pricks. But then again, looking at our pitiful state budget, OSP knows they can't survive without heavy ticketing.

Well, he WAS driving on a suspended license with no insurance...add to that that he's going 142 in a 55, and he's a 19-year-old driving a modded civic, and I think they were too lenient. The guy's a danger to everyone on the road.

I got a 109mph in a 65mph ticket here in NH. The fine was like $450, and I lost my license for 20 days. The fines in Mass are insane...

How can it when the overwhelming majority of people with suspended licenses got that way simply because they couldn't afford to pay a small traffic fine? With enough money to mod a Civic, I doubt this punk was one of those, but 99.9% of the time a suspended license is simply the added penalty for being poor.

So pull your pompous head out of your ass. The most dangerous people on the road are drunk drivers and arrogant cell phone-abusing drivers who refuse to pay attention to the road. A punk like this is a drop in the bucket in comparison. Hell, I rate the everyday assholes who run red lights chasing the yellow as more dangerous than this punk, simply because I see dozens of those everydamnday and this case was so rare it made the national news.

A stock Civic couldn't but a heavy modified Civic could. That Civic either has a Integra engine or a heavy modified Civic engine (replace cams/pistons/gears/etc.) and other modified parts such as lighter seats, lighter hood.

Too bad no pics of his Civic.

People like to focus on speed, because it's the one thing that they can quantify. Driver education will never happen until people stop with the idea that EVERYONE should be able to drive. In California, there is absolutly no safety inspections that are ever done (unless a cop pulls you over for something insanely dumb), but they'll be anal about making sure that your gas cap seals.
