What I can't help wonder is why is Dezign posting on ATOT while at work??? Should Dezign be doing some actual work at work? Calling off sick is no excuse to be fired, but using company resources on company time to perform non-company activities is an offense that could be reason for termination.

I never post on AT while at work...;)

Dezign was not in the wrong by leaving at 6:30pm... she expected to be home by 10:30 or 11 at that latest.

that still does not matter. She is paid to be at work. if she cant make it in on time then she should not be working there.

I post more often from work than anywhere else. But then again my bosses know about it, and I'm on straight commission and the top producer in the office this year.

some sort of flexibility should have been displayed by the boss...unless Dezign really needed to be there (ie important business meeting with client, etc), she can use her sick leave/vacation any way she want.

Dezign,

I've worked for people like that before. It was embarrassing, humiliating, and very educational.

I know it seems unfair right, but you need to think long and hard about what happened today.

In any event, it's obvious you'll get nowhere fast in this job.

My advice to you is what you are already doing... keep your current job until you land a different one.

When you DO quit, be polite and professional about it. You are in a professional job, and behaving unprofessionally will get you burned down the road.

Good luck, and try not to get too upset from this... think of it as a learning experience.

Go back to your parents' basement. She had paid leave time available and sh!t happens. She can't control the traffic. Should she have left first thing Sunday morning in order to please your royal highness?

Like I said, sh!t happens. I have never punished an employee for circumstances beyond their control unless they make a habit of it. In an isolated instance like this, I would have stood behind my employee, not reprimanded her. I want happy productive people, not demoralized people putting their resumes together.

heh when i owned my own store we would play games when it was slow. Granted everyhting would be done for the day and someone would still need to be there. So we would play quake or doom heh.

i did the same when i was a manager. I dont care if you browse the net long as you keep up on your work. If you dont keep up with everyone else and you post to ATOT then i will fire you. Im all for haveing fun while working but the work still needs to be done.

I agree, though in a different way.

If her boss is going to behave that way, Dez shouldn't work there.

I agree. IF she called in sick or took a personal day that would be fine. but she called in "tired". That is the diffrence. If you are sick or just need a day away from the office thats great. But she went to vages and got back late. then decided she didnt want to come in because she was out late.

Boss: "You should have planned it better, and that is no excuse. I don't want to hear excuses. I don't care why you were back at 6:30am, that's something you have to suck up and deal with. I expect you to be ready to work at 9am, unless you have previously requested time off, unless it is an emergency, or unless you are sick."

Me (not knowing what else to say... planned it better??!): "I understand."

Boss: "If it happens again, you WILL be written up and dismissed. Do I make myself clear?"

Me: "Yes. It won't happen again."

Boss: "Do you think I'm being fair? I could write you up right now, but I'm choosing not to."

Me: "Yes. It won't happen again. Thank you."

Boss: "See that it doesn't."

(end of meeting)

yeap sh!t happens. but again it is NOT the companys problem. it is hers. if she cant work because she stayed out late then they have every right to fire her.

you want happy people? how about not having people call in because they are "tired". the other people in the office had to take up the slack because she was out late. yes i understand it is NOT her fault. but again it is not works fault either.

As a manager i have to side on the boss. Granted calling her at home to see if she is sick is over the top. Unless she has a track record of calling in.

i would have to say this is by far the best advice given yet. no matter how tempted you are, do NOT be unprofessional when the day comes for you to leave. many industries can be a "small world" in themselves, that you never know who you will run into in near future. it is particularly true in biotech/pharmaceutical industry.

i'm glad that in my company we have unlimited sick leaves, in addition to about 5 weeks of paid vacation/personal days. heck, my boss has sent me home on numerous occasions just because i looked tired or was coughing during meetings.

micromanagement sucks, and i only encountered it when i worked at restaurants while i was in high school.

hehe. yeah I hate when people abuse company resources. My company has twice the # of IT people we need, I'm pretty sure it's so that half our time can be spent playing on the net. :) -TAL

The way I see it, they both are right.

The boss is right in calling her on the carpet about her behavior. (though she's being a total b!tch about it).

Design has every right to decide she doesn't like it, and to find another job.

yeah design has every right to decide she dont like it and find onother job. in fact i would start looking if i was her. then again if i was her i wouldnt have called in "tired". then again i wouldnt go to vagas. I personally dont think gambling is fun. I have seen what addiction does and it is not pretty.

As it is she is screwed with that boss. I would go someplace else and work hard and not do something like this if i was her. If nothing else get away from the lady. Unless design has a history of calling in sick there is NO reason for the boss to call unless its a emergancy. I would never do that (unless they had a history of doing such stuff).

A lot Management = Power Tripping. Very common. Especially in micromanagement situations as Team Leads/Team Supervisors.

I worked for someone like that at Comp USA. Boy was it a wake up call for me. I'd say use this as motivation to finish up your schooling (if you're still schooling) and to also look for another job! If I recall you're trying to get a job at Globe shoes, right? Try your hardest to get in there. I would hate to work for a boss like that. It seems to me that the boss may have something against you.

And ignore the pre-programmed jerks in this thread who think that the "company" rules the world and all the people that live in it. I bet they believe the employee handbook was written by some infallible God in Upper Management :) I also bet they think that the "company" generates all the money and is doing you a favour by giving you some of it
