Great job deadken!!! Now, heal up!

Went running for the first time since the marathon this weekend in hopes resting my knew would do some good. Unfortunately, it didn't as my knee was clicking and I could feel my IT band rubbing against bone during that time.

Well, I'm signed-up for a half-marathon on Memorial Day and the next weekend is the Runner's World Running Festival in Boston. Saturday, June 1st is a 5k, 10k(back and forth on the Newton Hills of the marathon route) then 2 mile dog run. I'm signed up for all of them since they're about a hour after one another. Then on June 2nd is the Heartbreak Hill half-marathon(which of course covers the Newton Hills of the marathon).

So, did a 2.5 trail run with my dog on Saturday and ran 6 miles on Sunday. Going to see my PT this week to get a recommendation for a orthopedic specialist since I've done something to my knee as it's not getting any better from rest.

Congrats dk! Sounds like you had a great race, and a PR is a PR, no matter if it's a few seconds or a few minutes. Take it easy this week and rest up!

I hate to say it (not being in your shoes) but wonder how much of your issues Friday were phantom pains. (Everyone gets these odd strange pains and pings race week that seem to come from nowhere, mostly mental b/c you are worried about a lot of stuff) It's hard to explain but between nerves and less physical activity your body acts differently.

For your calf - how often are you stretching and strengthening it? Are you also foam rolling or using a marathon stick daily? All important stuff to keep it loose, esp with your prior injury. Anyway, congrats again :)

Whew... What a week!

... snipped ....

Nice report dk.

Take this for what it is worth, but my wife is a PharmD and has told me on more than one occasion to not take ibuprofen before hard runs. There is a fair amount of research showing various dangers (kidneys and intestines mainly) when mixing the two. I'm sure taking a couple before a race if you are injured isn't a huge deal, but I used to use it somewhat regularly before "hard" runs and that is probably not something that was the best idea.

Anyhow, that's a heck of a run. Congrats!

Congratulations to deadken on a great half and a PR!!

Sunday morning I volunteered at a local 5K put on by my running club. I've done various things at the start/finish area before as a race volunteer, but this was the first time I got road marshall duty, stopping traffic as the race crossed a major intersection. It was surprisingly fun cheering everyone on and getting high-fives from the kids. I was near the end, and some of the kids were looking pretty beat as they approached, but once they saw my hand sticking out, they'd give a big grin, slap my hand, and take off for the finish. A great morning, even if I was up before 6AM on a weekend! :D

Thanks for the encouragement guys.

Thanks for fixing that mileage error spacejamz, I messed us up because 2 entries came in while I was typing my long assed post.

I don't have a foam roller or a 'marathon stick'. I never really needed one until this calf muscle acted up. Someone said maybe it was nerves, I don't know...

In that long post, I never mentioned that right after the race, I met up with the sales guy from my local running store (who was at the race supporting his sister who ran the 10k). He recognized me and asked how my shorts were. I didn't recognize him at first, but then realized it wasn't a gay pick up line or some guy looking for a fight. I told him the shorts worked out well, but mentioned my calf. He suggested a pair of compression sleeves (compression stockings?). So, I bought a set on the way home. I'm looking forward to trying them out. He said that they should keep my calves from bouncing around so much and could help out. Ehhh... What's another $36 ($45 - %20 for being member of the local running club)? I'll try them out and maybe they will help my calf.

I'm thinking I gotta get some sleep. I want to try a 2 mile morning run tomorrow (my legs felt pretty good today). Thanks again for the suggestions, comments, and math corrections!

3.5 pace miles tonight. Dang it got hot quick (was 82 when I started). About two miles in and I was seriously regretting the pizza and wings we had for dinner.

+10 miles on a new set of trails as a scout run for a group run I'm setting up in June. Holy hills like huge technical poor footing hills. Multiple hills with 25-35 degree gradients. It was brutal. Plus it was 88 degrees out and I am not used to heat like that at all yet.
