It's been a while since I've been here, so I'll let you know what happened for me at the Brooklyn Half Marathon:
After having problems with my Calf at the Long Island Half Marathon, my leg felt great over the next 13 days including race day. It was likely a little bit of a fluke / muscle problem. I've made adjustments since then (more potassium, more calcium, a multi-vitamin, and even Tonic Water (w/ Quinine)) and as far as I can tell, I'm back to 'normal'.
I was planning on running the Brooklyn Half alongside my nieces pace (which is over 3 min / mile slower than my pace). But, almost everyone I mentioned it to suggested that I shouldn't run that long that slow. One guy at the runners store said it'd be fine, just to think of it as a 'recovery run', but he was the only exception. So, I talked it over with my niece (she's 30) and she was fine with just meeting me at the finish. Now, I was going into the race looking forward to making up for the L.I. Half.
Unfortunately, I've never run a race with the NYRR club. They never asked for my pace during the application process and I ended up getting a bib number of 32292! Yikes! I didn't realize how many people run this race! There were 2 starting waves 45 minutes apart. According to the FAQ: There are 40 corrals total, each wave consisting of 20 corrals. We expect approximately 700 runners per corral.
We were corralled in so tight that I didn't even realize when I had passed the starting line until everyone started running! It took me a few seconds to get my running app and Bluetooth Hearth Rate monitor started, but then I was off! Ummm... Not really... I spent the first 6 miles zig-zagging more than running straight. My phone basically tells the whole story:
(dis-regard the first mile pace. It took a little bit for it to lock onto the GPS)
Mile / Pace
1 / 3:38 (obvious GPS error)
2 / 8:15
3 / 7:47
4 / 7:58
5 / 8:07
6 / 8:34
7 / 7:24
8 / 7:30
9 / 7:34
10 / 7:35
11 / 7:35
12 / 7:40
13 / 7:21
Total time according to my phone 1:42:02
Total time according to the race clock: 1:42:43
Wow... That's
slower compared to what I ran at the L.I. Half! Arrghh... Ohh well. I ran the best race I could. I just could not make up for the slow pace of the first 6 miles. Again, my fastest mile of the race was from mile 12 to mile 13! That tells me that I still had some 'gas left in the tank'! So, while I should be preparing for the Sprint Triathlon I'm signed up for (in August), instead I'm considering running another half marathon on Fathers Day! I will get to where I want to be one way or another. Ultimately, I want a sub 100 minute half marathon. I think with the right conditions, I should be able to pick up the 1 - 3 minutes needed to make that a reality if things just work out. Who knows?!? This is just the mental 'head' game I play with myself in order to keep me motivated. I'll be happy as long as I finish, I'll just be really satisfied if I can get under the 100minute mark!
For anyone who is interested, here are the race results:
http://web2.nyrrc.org/cgi-bin/htmlos.cgi/69169.1.671970545619567595
There were 25,587 total finishers.
I was #206 (out of 941 people) in my group Men 45-49. The thing that is glaring to me, is if you look that the results, look at the bib numbers from #1 down to me and you'll see that there isn't even anyone else with a bib from 17xxx to 32xxx. That tells me that I was passing A LOT OF PEOPLE. There are maybe 15 people below me that have 5 digit bib numbers. None of those 15 people below me had a number over 20xxx. This is the stuff that makes me think I could have done better. I think I just needed to be in less traffic.
Like I said, I'm not unhappy. I'm just feeling that I need to do another half and see what I can do if conditions are right. Who knew that half marathons were so addicting?!? Is this 'normal'?
BTW: I met up with a co-worker and some people from his local running group at a bar after the race (my niece was driving). I downed a few beers and had a GREAT time. If only I had started in the first wave, I would have had an additional 45 minutes of drinking time!
