Last run before Monday. Felt like I wasn't putting any effort in but I was going at marathon pace. Exhausted from going to so many marathon events. At an event last night, got a pic with Doug Flutie. Need to stuff my face at my team's marathon dinner tonight. During taper, my nerves have gotten the best of me and I haven't eaten as much as I should. I've actually lost weight during the taper.

When I slipped on ice back in Jan, straining my right hip flexor, I favored my left leg which developed a tight IT band which pulled my knee cap and muscles toward it. I hope the following have gotten it to a point where I'll have no slow downs on Monday. But I'm going to try and not think about time as it's going to be a 26.2 mile party and celebration.

KT tape job by my PT to keep the knee cap in place:

To loosen the IT band as much as possible, dry needling:

Now that I've updated my mileages, I'd like to ask you guys about 'tapering'. I'm signed up for the Long Island Half Marathon 2 weeks from today (May 4th). So, I ran 13.3 miles yesterday to get my last long distance run in. I felt good and shaved another 3 minutes off of my previous time. Now, here is the thing: I've never run a half marathon. I've done over 13 miles 3 times now, but they have always been solo. My niece has finally gotten me to register for the Brooklyn Half Marathon, so I figured I'd run the L.I. Half 13 days before (so I can run at my pace) and then run the Brooklyn Half alongside her at her pace. She told me that in her taper schedule, she's supposed to run 12 miles 2weeks before the race date. Ok, so I have that part pretty much covered. Now what? Do I follow her schedule? Are there different taper schedules based: age groups, sex, abilities, etc??

Honestly, I've been working VERY hard at improving myself. I've been making big strides lately. The first time I finished 13.2 it took me 1:58:26 (05/06/12). Less than 2 years later and I did it in 1:46:58 (03/09/14). Now, yesterday, it took me 1:44:26 (04/19/14) to do 13.3. That seems to work out to about a 1:43:00 half marathon time. I'm stoked that I've improved that much and I am seriously happy that I even managed to shave almost 4 minutes over my time just 6 weeks ago. That put me at a sub 8 minute mile (7:51) over the entire distance! Arrghhh... One lousy mile took me 8:04 or else I could say the entire distance was sub 8MM.

So, I'm fired up. I have a mere 2 weeks to go and I don't know how people typically prepare. I want to keep running 6 days a week, but I'm trying to learn if I should cut down on days, pace, or mileage. Yes, I can look it all up on the internet, but I prefer to hear it from you guys who do this sort of thing. Any suggestions?

BTW: I'm going to post a thread for this in the Health and Fitness section. Now that I've posted all of this here, I realized that I might be better served by doing it in the main forum where more people would see it.

-Thanks, Ken

Also let me wish Capt Caveman all the best of luck for the Boston Marathon!

When you get the chance, I know you will be busy with the race and then all of the parties, please give us a rundown of how it all went!

I'm interested in hearing about what you did for your taper and how you feel about losing weight during the taper affected you.

Lastly, I had an issue where my physical therapist diagnosed me as having overdeveloped quads which were pulling my kneecap out of its intended path. He gave me some simple exercises (easy to do, not really easy to explain) which have helped greatly. He also told me to massage my ITB while in the shower. Those things have made a world of difference. My knee never hurt me while running. But going up, or even worse, down stairs gave me pains in my knees.

And thanks for your support Mursilis! I'll do my best to do ATHF proud!

Amazing day in Boston! One big 26.2 mile party. Felt like a rockstar running the course, giving everyone high fives, many kisses to the girls at Wellesley College, interacting and hearing the roar of the crowds. After finishing it was amazing the amount of police and military officers coming over to congratulate us and shake our hands. And then walking by all the spectators was pretty special. Everyone congratulating and thanking us from rooftops to people coming up and wanting to take pictures with us

Finished around 4:30 and could have possibly run it a hour less than that but at mile 14, a team member was struggling, so I and another teammate walked/ran with him the rest of the way to the finish line. Don't think he would have made it alone. But we go him running the last mile to the turn on Boylston St and had a blast hooting, hollering and high fiving everyone before we joined up to run across the finish line together.

Not the marathon I planned to run but I wouldn't have had it any other way.

Pic from behind the Finish Line. This year, the view from behind the Finish Line was a happy moment and not a nightmare like last year. I can close the book on last year and can cherish the most amazing day.
