11 miles yesterday including 6x 1200m at 5K pace. Felt good, so that day off must have helped! 8 miles today on some trails in my new Altra Instincts. Minimalist runners, check them out. A true zero-drop shoe that still has cushioning for running on pavement/asphalt, and a very wide toebox that allows the toes to spread out. I think I like them!

10 K race this morning. Ran against a bunch of guys and gals from Fort Bragg. The soldiers kicked my ass but I finished first in the old people division. Took almost one minute off my time compared to last fall.

Nice jobs, drteming and mega! I did a workout today; totaled 6 miles at 5:50 pace. It was a beautiful morning for a run; mid 50s, partly sunny with a very light, crisp breeze. I felt ok, but had to modify the workout in order to finish it. I think I have to re-vamp my training plan for Philly as my fitness is not coming around like I had hoped. Still in pretty decent shape though!

Thanks scorch, you are still soooo much faster than I am, even when your fitness is off. You rock.

I did 10 miles this morning, but won't be able to run again until Wednesday. I'll be on assignment in GA for a few days. Y'all keep up the good work.

easy 20 miles tonight

How few of us can say that without being inherently illogical! ;) You continue to impress. How old are you again, and when did you start?

+8 on Sat.
+17 on Sun. (in 2:27 - feeling good about beating 4:00 in my first marathon in Nov.)

Haha, thanks, mursilis. It's rare for me to say that too, but I felt good and it was easy! Last 20 miler I did, not so much. I'm 28 and have been running for about 13 years. I was always a mediocre runner in high school and college before buckling down and really training hard post-college. I'm now running marathons at the same pace I ran 5Ks back in high school. Still get whomped on by most of my friends though...

What marathon are you training for in November? Definitely sounds like your training is going well!

You're still plenty faster than most of us mere mortals - congratulations on your impressive results. I'm doing Richmond in Nov., which I intend to race for time, and then the Goofy Challenge (half-marathon followed by a full marathon the next day) in Disney World in Jan. with my brother, the tri-geek. He just finished his first Ironman. The Goofy isn't going to be for time for either of us! ;) That's going to be more like a jogging party! As long as we're ahead of the sweepers (@15:00 miles - shouldn't be hard), we're not going to worry about the clock too much.

My son runs some, but doesn't like it, though I think he has potential. He did his second half in Sept. just after turning 13, and broke 2 hours (1:59:56) in miserable conditions - ~80 degrees at the start, and ~80% humidity. That's with not much training, and all of it half-hearted. I think he could be pretty good if he actually trained, but i can't force him, so I just cross my fingers he'll find the desire one of these days. Anything in particular which caused you to decide to get more serious?

Nice, my wife and I want to do the Goofy Challenge one of these years; Disney was her first marathon. Richmond was one race I was looking at this fall, but I chose Philadelphia instead.

The one thing that really caused me to start training seriously was the realization that I had potential to be a better-than-average runner. As I mentioned, I was profoundly mediocre in high school and for the first two years of college. Then I transferred to a 4-year school that had a pretty good cross country/track team, and I dropped a minute off my 5K time in just a month of training with them. Each year since then, I have steadily improved, and each improvement brings me new motivation to see what I can do.

Just as an example, when I transferred to that school, my 5K PR was 19:30. I ran 18:25 after one month, and then 17:24 the next year. After that, I made it my goal to break 17:00. It took me several years, and during that time, I wasn't even sure if it was possible for me to run that fast. I mean, sub-17? That's crazy fast! This past spring, I came within half a second of breaking 16 minutes, but it's taken me 4 years to drop that last minute.

5 miles of intervals. Fastest set was at 5:45 pace--though it was only for 400 meters :p

4+4 yesterday for the 1st time in a long time. Of course my partner was dying towards the end 'cause she hasn't run in a long time. Didn't do anything for me. Came in today saying how her hips and knees are killing her. <3
