Malaise type stuff. I think he's overtraining and won't be able to do the 50k. I have tried to talk to him but he won't listen, he feels insulted when I try to tell him he may not be cut out for this stuff. I'm hoping he'll get tired of trying to keep up with me and find something else to work on. He's faster at shorter distances than I am, I'd like to see him keep on with the 5k and 10k races, maybe half marathons.

Oh well. I did a short 5 mile run on the roads tonight.

How old is your son again? I agree with Scorch that 50k is a lot for a young person. In fact, there was a local half-marathon here last weekend where they explicitly denied entry to anyone under 16. For the full marathon I ran in May you needed to be at least 18.

Anyways, marathoners tend to peak in their late 20s; ultra runners into their early to mid 30s. There's no reason why he can't give it another try when he gets a bit older.

He's 17. And you guys aren't telling me anything I haven't already tried telling him. He's stubborn and motivated, and since I'm doing it he thinks he can do it. I need for him to figure this out on his own somehow. Maybe I'll show him some authoritative info on this subject.

Tell him about me. I'm 27 so the age thing won't be a good argument, but I've been pushing my body to do things it doesn't want to do since January.

In January I decided I wanted to get into shape again and started running. I quickly got up to about 40 km/week after not running at all for well, years. My legs started to hurt but I just ran through it, then found out I got stress fractures and was sidelined for about 5 weeks.

After those healed I started up again, and kept running until I got sore, then ran sore the next day, and the next, until it got painful. I'd take a day or two off until the pain had subsided into soreness, and then run until it got painful again. Last weekend I messed my shins up again and I haven't run in about 6 days now.

I enjoy running and I want to do a marathon, but I keep pushing past what my legs say I should do. You have to listen to your body despite the drive to keep up or improve or you'll just set yourself further back.

I don't know how long I'll be out again but I'm not going to run until I'm 100% pain free. I still keep up with the thread and it sucks not being able to contribute, but I think I've learned my lesson now.

Hey Safeway,

That's awesome mileage, but we're going to stick with running and walking in this thread. Adding cycling would bump up the mileage count too quickly.

I'm sure if you start your own cycling thread you'd have a lot of contributors!

Cheers.

Way to go yelo! Welcome to the club, it's a lot of fun isn't it?

I was supposed to run in a race today, The Finger Lakes 50s, but my fun money budget didn't allow for it. :( So I did a pleasant 13 miler on my favorite trails today and imagined myself in the race. I was gonna do 20 but a footbridge was OOS so I had to turn around early. Figures.

I'm in the same boat Buddha. With the ultra coming all I really have time for is running, but I do love riding bike. I could spend hours every day riding.

Congrats yelo333 and GarfieldtheCat - great races!

Did 6 miles at race pace this morning. Started too fast again (18 secs under in 1st mile) and although I held on to my intended pace (only 12 secs fast by the end), it felt a bit too difficult. The heat is partly to blame but mostly I'm a dumbass for blowing my load in the first mile. I need to settle down a bit on the next workout. 9 miles total.

...and 22 today. I think I'm dead now. 6532

(let me know if that math is right... I'm a little glycogen-depleted right now...)

I only did 12 today and I'm totally wiped. This was my first 50 mile week and my body is feeling it. I'm going to do another 50 mile week and then try for 60 the following week. I've got to get my overall mileage up for the ultra.

This is hard but I'm excited to be making progress.

10 miles for me today. Was going to do some strides but thunder and impending doom halted those plans. Oh well, at least 4 of my miles were barefoot on deliciously soft and moist grass. 6570

I took a training day off today. I'm sooo tired, I fell asleep eating dinner tonight. Hopefully I feel well rested tomorrow, I plan on doing 12 miles with my son.
