I covered 10 miles today, but ran only 6.
Yesterday on my run to work in my VFFs I stepped on a very large, very sharp stone on the road. It hurt, but by this morning it wasn't too bad. I decided to put on my Saucony runners for the runs today just to give that sore spot a bit of a break. What a huge mistake.
The run in to work of 4.2 km was fine. Thus, for the run home I thought I'd take a roundabout way and bring my daily total to 10 miles. The first 3km were not bad, but over the next 3km, my feet, shins, and knees all became extremely painful. It got to the point where I was stuck in the middle of a forest, walking along fighting back tears and almost vomiting. I hobbled along the trails to the closest exit, then took the runners and socks off and walked barefoot on the road home for a few km. As soon as the shoes came off my legs started to loosen up and the pain dropped off. I put the shoes back on, unlaced, for the last couple km home just because I was tired of pulling little rocks out of my feet.
I don't know exactly why it happened, but it sure did feel like someone had wadded up some paper and stuck it under the arches of my feet and that was the source of the pain. It felt like all my weight was on my arches, and no matter how I tried to modify my stride, I couldn't get my body weight shifted to my toes or my heel. When using my VFFs, the balls of my feet get a little sore on runs over 10 km if I run only on sidewalk, and the muscles in my shins get sore and tense when I get home. I can take care of that with some good stretching and massage, but never before has it hurt so badly while running.
My runners are now officially shitlisted. I only hope this doesn't put me out of commission for any length of time.
