8.5 today; felt nice to only run for an hour! Now I am being abducted and taken camping against my will! (Well, maybe not against my will but my girlfriend won't tell me where we are going.) I will report back on Tuesday! Rounding down today - 6226 - hey that's a palindrome!

Scorch - you'll miss a few days of running, but I'm sure the beer, burgers and outdoor sex will make up for it . Have a good one!

6 miles last night, including some tempo work.

Only a couple miles for me, but a few weeks ago I could barley run a minute with grabbing my sides or grasping for air.

Congrats and keep up the hard work venkman.

I'm heading out for what I plan to be a 12 miler on trails. I'll post up my exact mileage when I return.

As planned, 12 miles. What was unplanned was that I did it in 90 minutes, 7:30 average pace. For me that's moving along smartly.

 Good work venkman and Megatomic!

Did some pace work yesterday. 6 miles at marathon race pace. Went out way too fast by mistake (24 seconds fast on the first mile) but I managed to moderate the pace so that by the end of the 6 miles I was still 24 seconds fast (i.e. right on pace for the last 5 miles).

Wasn't cooked at the end but it was a bit harder than it should have been. 9 miles total.

I covered 10 miles today, but ran only 6.

Yesterday on my run to work in my VFFs I stepped on a very large, very sharp stone on the road. It hurt, but by this morning it wasn't too bad. I decided to put on my Saucony runners for the runs today just to give that sore spot a bit of a break. What a huge mistake.

The run in to work of 4.2 km was fine. Thus, for the run home I thought I'd take a roundabout way and bring my daily total to 10 miles. The first 3km were not bad, but over the next 3km, my feet, shins, and knees all became extremely painful. It got to the point where I was stuck in the middle of a forest, walking along fighting back tears and almost vomiting. I hobbled along the trails to the closest exit, then took the runners and socks off and walked barefoot on the road home for a few km. As soon as the shoes came off my legs started to loosen up and the pain dropped off. I put the shoes back on, unlaced, for the last couple km home just because I was tired of pulling little rocks out of my feet.

I don't know exactly why it happened, but it sure did feel like someone had wadded up some paper and stuck it under the arches of my feet and that was the source of the pain. It felt like all my weight was on my arches, and no matter how I tried to modify my stride, I couldn't get my body weight shifted to my toes or my heel. When using my VFFs, the balls of my feet get a little sore on runs over 10 km if I run only on sidewalk, and the muscles in my shins get sore and tense when I get home. I can take care of that with some good stretching and massage, but never before has it hurt so badly while running.

My runners are now officially shitlisted. I only hope this doesn't put me out of commission for any length of time.

Actually I think I'll be fine. I had a long hot shower, 2 ibuprofen, and then a 2 hour nap with an ice pack between my shins and I think I'm fine now. Nothing hurts and I think I could actually pull off a run right now if I had to.

Geez silverpig, that sounds rough man. I really hope it's nothing more than a bad stone bruise. Keep icing that foot and I hope you're back on it soon.

Oh it wasn't the bruise that hurt at all. It was just running in the runners and how uncomfortable they are now. I guess it changed the mechanics of my stride or something.

silverpig, have you tried running trails/cross country in the VFFs yet? I'm wondering if they'd be useable in those situations?

I have yes. They're quite good with one major exception.

There is a huge park near where I live that has at least 50 km of trails through the forest. It's really quite nice to run in. Most of the trails are crushed limestone/gravel and the VFFs do really really well on those. Some of the trails are more dirt than anything else, and they do well on those as well. Running on gravel trails is also really comfortable. So long as the rocks are less than 1/2" in size you can't feel them at all.

There are a few trails though which are mostly dirt with partially exposed baseball sized rocks embedded in them. I ran on those a few times and they were very uncomfortable to run on. Every time I stepped on a rock, all of the pressure of my stride was centered on one or two of the joints in the ball of my foot, often at an odd angle. After a few of those type of steps, I spent a lot of effort jumping from side to side to avoid the rocks which really hampered my speed.

I'm still trying to figure out a few good routes through the park that give me mostly limestone to run on and I'll spend most of my time on those.

Running on asphalt is really quite comfortable in the VFFs. Just gotta avoid the big rocks in the bike paths :p

PS - if anyone here is a graphic artist, please shoot me a PM, looking to have a logo made for a website! It's related to running, and drinking :)

Awesome. My run felt great also, just a little better than 7:30/mile so my speed is coming up. But I think the nail on my right second toe is going to fall off. I blackened it a few months ago and I reblackened it yesterday now it hurts like hell and seems to be coming up from the flesh. This'll be my first lost nail, a traditional right of passage, right?

Never had this problem. Are your shoes to small? I noticed that when I ran over 12+ miles on a run that I would develop blisters. I had to get another pair of shoes that were a size-up to deal with the swelling of my feet for my long runs.
