Never had this problem. Are your shoes to small? I noticed that when I ran over 12+ miles on a run that I would develop blisters. I had to get another pair of shoes that were a size-up to deal with the swelling of my feet for my long runs.
My shoes were fitted to me at Fleet Feet Sports. I'm a size 9 to 9.5, they hooked me up with a size 10 to allow for swelling on longer runs. I don't get any blisters and the shoes are the epitome of comfort, truly. This toe started getting damaged in my last pair of shoes - it may be a biomechanics issue.

Oh, and there is a major callous (also painful) forming on the front of the same toe. My wife says my feet are turning ugly, as if they weren't before... But what can I say, how many runners have nicely manicured feet/toes? That's just the way it is, and it's only going to get worse as my mileage increases.

As far as your toe problem, I believe you may have Morton's Toe, also called Morton's Foot. This is characterized by having a second toe longer than your first toe (so it rubs up against the end of the shoe).

It may not just be the size of your running shoes that affects blistering, but also the shape of the toebox. You may need to experiment with a shoe that has a narrow and slightly longer toebox rather than a shorter, wider one. There might also be orthotics that can help with this issue. I would see a podiatrist to get more specific recommendations.

As far as losing toenails and getting callouses, etc. I wouldn't say it's common. I have a small sample size to draw from, but none of my running friends from high school or university have lost toenails. I haven't had a blackened or lost toenail in the entire 12 years I've been running. I've only had callouses and blisters when I accidentally bunched up my sock when I put on my shoes, or when I finally wore right through a sock and had my heel rubbing against the inside of my shoe.

Ok, good to know you don't have Morton's Toe then. Good link - looks like there are a couple of fixes for draining the fluid. Jeff does mention to watch out for socks bunching up in your shoes and also heat and humidity.

I guess I've just been extremely lucky. It's pretty temperate where I live and even on the longest and/or most intense weeks of training, I haven't gotten a black toenail.

I missed the part about heat and humidity. I've been doing alot of humid running lately. And I have been wearing some new socks. Both of these things do coincide with my toe getting worse lately. I'm going to give my foot a rest tonight and try again tomorrow with my old socks and see if that makes a difference. Besides, it's raining cats and dogs right now. I'm getting tired of the rain.

Well I got in 6 miles + 14 miles + 6 miles while I was camping (I took yesterday off; first day off in at least several months!) But that brings our total to: 6358

By the way, Mega, I always lose the nail on my second toe too, and I don't have Morton's toe. It's from running downhills; my foot slides forward and the toes hit the front of the shoe. Even in properly sized shoes it happens, because no shoe is going to keep your foot completely stationary. I usually get a buildup of blood or clear fluid under the nail, which pushes it up, and then when the swelling subsides, the nail is just flapping around all loose. I usually pull the nail off at this time and all is well. I don't think I ever have a fully-grown nail on that toe.

Yep, I'm running a lot of hills too. I guess that's it, you're describing exactly what I'm dealing with at the moment. My toe feels a lot better today, the swelling went down quite a bit in just one day. I wonder when the nail is gonna be ready to come off?

good run regardless, Mega. Deerflies are the worst. I have been known to do aerobatic maneuvers on trails trying to dodge the little fuckers. I did 12 today with 4 on the track at tempo pace. Luckily no flies :p 6408

Maybe I should do more road running. I don't seem to notice deer flies anywhere but on the trails. I did see a woman jogging the route I normally follow when I do road work today, maybe she needs a training partner, I'm looking for a new one. My son isn't doing much running anymore because: 1) his knee is killing him. 2) he's working a summer job. 3) he's going to try to play football this fall. :(

I haven't had any black toenails before, but I don't do nearly the volume of running some of you guys do. After an 8-10 miler I'll sometimes notice a bit of discomfort in the middle toenail on my right foot, but nothing's ever come of it.

I just found out that my boy was able to get a 9 miler done today. Seems his knee is getting better. Maybe he'll find time to run with his old man one day soon.

I was at work while he ran so I missed out today. The root of his injury is that he charged down a very steep hill to catch up with me a few weeks ago. I've warned him about taking care of his knees but he's young and "invincible" and of course he ignored me. Now he knows to listen to dad, and he'd better if he wants to be ready and able to do the 50k in October.

Man, he's doing the 50K too? That's sick. I don't know if running that far is such a good idea for a young'n like him. Most people recommend waiting until your 20s to run marathons. But then again, Alberto Salazar and others ran marathons when they were 14.

Anyway, I did 10 miles on some trails today. Felt bad at first but warmed up after only 7 miles and almost felt ok after that! 6437

It's his decision to do it, but just to be honest here I don't think he's cut out for long distance running. He can't keep pace at all, he's prone to injury, and he's getting "sick" alot. Malaise type stuff. I think he's overtraining and won't be able to do the 50k. I have tried to talk to him but he won't listen, he feels insulted when I try to tell him he may not be cut out for this stuff. I'm hoping he'll get tired of trying to keep up with me and find something else to work on. He's faster at shorter distances than I am, I'd like to see him keep on with the 5k and 10k races, maybe half marathons.

Oh well. I did a short 5 mile run on the roads tonight.
