    Floppy problems

I just had similar symptoms with one of my mainboards. First I swapped drives -- no change in symptoms. Second I replaced the floppy cables -- no change in symptoms. Third I swapped CPUs -- no change in symptoms. Now I am RMAing the mainboard.

    Success rate of BIOS flashing?

Congratulations! You have an ABIT mainboard. Their BIOS plugs into a socket. Worst case if the Flash goes bad is aroung $30.00 for a new BIOS from ABIT. Some manufacturers still solder the BIOS to the board. Then if the Flash fails, the board is trash. Go for it!

Should I put my 2 HDs (non-RAID) on my RAID slots?

With four EIDE channels available, you will definitely get better performance if you put each of your four EIDE devices on separate channels. I have tried various combinations, my ABIT mainboard even allows me to run all four of my drives as slaves, can not measure any performance differences...

    Adding Second Home PC

You should also be aware that wireless networking invites interlopers. Do a Google search under "war driving" or "free wireless". "War driving" is becoming a competitive sport.

    Processor/Chipset advice

Just some facts -- NOT opinions! 1) Intel CPU chips have built in thermal shutdown AMD CPUs do not. You will really have to work at it to burn up a Pentium CPU. 2) ASUS mainboards have BIOS Chips soldered to the board. Most manufacturers use sockets. Have a BIOS flash go bad and it...

    ECC and nonECC RDRAM

If you need accuracy, ECC memory is worth the investment. If you need speed stay away from ECC. Incidentally I bought an ASUS Mainboard last summer. It suffered from the "Cold Start Problem" which was not identified in any of the reviews I read. When AsUS finally came out with a BIOS revision...

    Changing Com Ports

Is your BIOS reserving COM1 and COM2? You do not say what OS you are using. In Windows NT or Windows 2K you may also have to remove the COM Ports before installing your I/O card.

    Changing Com Ports

You did not say what operating system you are using. Some potential fixes are OS dependent. However the first step is to check you BIOS and make sure that No COM ports are reserved.

    Start up problem

The symptom you are describing is often an indication of a degrading power supply. Power supplys take a finite time to ramp up to the specified output voltages. If some thing changes this ramp up time, like an increased resistance in the path, the processor may not start on the first try. If...

    RAID questions

One of the systems I am working with uses an ABIT ST6 Raid (High Point 370) with four 90 Gig Maxtor hard drives. They are presently in a RAID 0+1 configuration and working perfectly. No Problem with access time. Before we set up the 0+1 configuration, we tried the striping only configuration...

    Good surge protector ?

I do not think I got my point across -- Sooooooo!! Surge Protectors wear out. Nobody can predict how long it takes for one to wear out. Too many variables. Buy a stand alone surge protector. Replace it often. I replace mine annually. Do NOT waste your money on a combination unit becuse you...
