<< The mini rant was not because of you. It was because I remembered a story on the news where someone said they "never see a surge protector do anything." >>

Ah, my mistake - carry on! :).

I do not think I got my point across -- Sooooooo!!

Surge Protectors wear out.
Nobody can predict how long it takes for one to wear out. Too many variables.
Buy a stand alone surge protector. Replace it often. I replace mine annually.
Do NOT waste your money on a combination unit becuse you will still need to add a surge protector in the future.

<< DO NOT BUY A BELKIN!!! They are totally worthless. I have seen plenty of them fail to protect the devices plugged into them. >>

Well, I guess throw away those useless Consumer Reports magazines. Why do I say that? Well, I'm living in an apartment complex and last summer, a severe storm rolled through--my lights were dimming very very very low--low enough for my computer to turn itself off, then the lights power back up in my apartment and my computer turns back on... this happened several times for 2 minutes or so... I even let my computer go through the whole no power/full power/no power.... conditions. No problems at all with any of my components, (click on my rig to see what's all plugged into my surge protector as well).

Belkin SurgeMaster II (the gray model) is now 6 years old and still--no damage and that's not the first time it went through hell. Anyway, there seems to be several people who are also satisfied with (EDIT: their) Belkin surge protectors so....

Finally, since they do come with an insurance policy ($50,000 or $25,000 or whatever it is), it'll more than cover the equipment that I have plugged into my surge protector, so if it dies or fails to protect me then free upgrade on Belkin, right?

And what does that have to do with Belking surge protectors protecting from SPIKES!?!?!? You are talking about sags and blackouts not surges and spikes.

Yea, I have a cheap generic surge protector that lasted well over 5 years (still works come to think of it). It only has 1 MOV and probably would not protect much at all but it still works. So I guess I could argue it is just as good as your Belkin.

As for the insurance... Well, just don't count on it. I had a Tripplite UPS fail and fry a sound card and they refused to fix it. They have so many ways out of the insurance, it's not even funny. Maybe you should read the fine print some time. :p
