iPod Nano, Zune, or iPod 80GB (depending on her needs: Nano for casual listener or the best in cool, Zune for the extensive music collection, iPod 80GB for music and external hard drive if she's a computer person).

Well I watched the engadget interface video. Looks pretty nice however.

1) I'd love to see how the hell the guy is scrolling (it does not show his hands) This is really important to me. In fact, I base buying on this.
2) I see you can't replace the battery. Surprise surprise. I won't buy something that expensive if you can't replace the battery. I have a cheap refurb nano that I don't expect to last forever.

The round button on the Zune is actually a 5 button click interface, much akin to a modern d-pad on a console controller, except its round instead of a +. It is also much more tactile.

Honestly alot of people go for the rogue thing and the zune is very rogue when her friends are all pulling out ipods where she could pimp out the zune and show all the customization is has (wallpapers etc). not saying hers one is better than the other.

as far as the clickwheel its already been surpassed by the toshiba gigabeat S (which i have and they are making the zune which is why it looks/functions similarly).

The + controller on the gigabeat is the same as the Zunes in terms of functionality.

Honestly a good software/firmware update or two from MS, and the Zune is head and shoulders above the Ipod. Right now though it seems they are just trying to rush it to market so they can sell it during the holiday shopping season.

Hopefully when they do add video to Zune market place, they have an option for a Zune Pass with Music and Video for ~$20-25/month.

Does the Zune support bluetooth? I got these logitech bluetooth headphones and would like to use em with an mp3 player.

The fact that zune only has 30gb makes me give it no consideration at all. My current player has 30gb and it feels crippling (especially if you have high quality rips), I hate having to decide what music to put on and what to take off. An 5.5G video and Zen Vision M is clearly the best option for only 50 bucks more for 60 gigs.

I listen to podcasts most the time that can be hours long. All MP3 players work just fine for my purposes but the one thing that the ipod has over anything I have seen is the scroll wheel. You can scroll through 3 hour tracks in seconds and not have to hold down FF for minutes. This is the number one most important feature for me in addition to the ipod bookmarking the podcast when you skip to the next track incase you want to go back to it. I'd love to know how scrolling through songs works on the Zune. I saw the guy FF through songs but that is one minutes every few seconds assumably him holding down a button as opposed to the ipod where it can scroll an hour in 3 seconds.

If the Zune can't match this, then it is useless to me.

BTW - I just read somewhere that microsoft plans to release much more models of the Zune in the future (no date specified) that means they'll prolly come out with a nono version as well. I love the 3" screen though!

is this even a question? zune is unproven, ugly, and frankly has no must have features. ipod is highly desirable sexy easy to use and a great present. if she shows her zune around...her friends will be like wtf? the only people to buy a zune for are true apple haters and geek friends who also hate apple for some reason. no one else would really want one. besides steve balmers children who apparently are banned from having ipods.

The ONLY thing Apple and Ipod have going for it is the marketing that makes the Ipod chic. It just goes to show people think shiny = pretty. The Zune isnt ugly, but to each his own. The Software interface on Zune is better than the Ipods. Period. And give me a fuggin break, the Zune is only marginally bigger than the Ipod.

As for people that keep knocking the WiFi feature, its extremely likely MS will offer a firmware update that expands its capabilities sometime in the first half of 2007. Videos/Movies will probably start appearing on Zune Marketplace around the same time as well.

sorry, it isn't just marketing. apple concentrates on what matters, not feature creep bs.

no they aren't going to expand wifi in any real way, that would make piracy too easy and well thats a no no. its just going to be another pointless feature.

and well is microsoft going to make it so we can rip hddvds/bluray to the zune? i mean if we are going to move towards hd formats ...it would totally stink if we would eventually not be able to use the video features of our portables without rebuying films on standard def dvds😛

How many days of music do you need in one go?

I don't really get the whole, ZOMG 30GB is wai too small for a portable music player, thing.

It doesn't take a genius to swap files, or indeed very long and it would take you a very, very long time to listen to 30GB of music (FFS you have to charge the thing many times over listening to 30GB of sensibly encoded music).

Don't give me that ' i need rips that are BETTAR than the original' story either, you'll be listening to it on earbuds in a environment that isn't dead silent, so there's no way you need ridiculously huge encodes, or could possibly tell the difference 😛

/rant.

I like the Zune, but im sorry, that comparison site listed above is just plain stupid.

As I said in another thread, lack of MAC support & plug in car support = NO GO for me

Unless your girlfriend is a geek, just get her an iPod and be done with it.

In most people's minds, MP3 Player = iPod right now. She's expecting an iPod if she asked for a music player, so just get her one and make her happy.

I am really interested in buying a zune, however I would like to use one first.

I don't really care if anyone else thinks it's "cool" I just want a good music player.

Of course this forum will say Zune. Reflexively, they hate anything Apple. This is a forum which would overwhelmingly tell you to buy an XBOX360 over anything else, even if there weren't a single piece of software written for it.

Ive been putting off buying a ipod for ever, but now that this is availible, I want one.
ZUNE

I bet the next ipod has wireless. Still, just because I hate itunes, ZUNE.

Way to generalise 😛

The poll doesn't appear to support your bitter and cynical view of the world however.

The Zune is fvcking big. We have display models at the CC I work at, it's way too big compared to the iPod.
