The ONLY thing Apple and Ipod have going for it is the marketing that makes the Ipod chic. It just goes to show people think shiny = pretty. The Zune isnt ugly, but to each his own. The Software interface on Zune is better than the Ipods. Period. And give me a fuggin break, the Zune is only marginally bigger than the Ipod.

As for people that keep knocking the WiFi feature, its extremely likely MS will offer a firmware update that expands its capabilities sometime in the first half of 2007. Videos/Movies will probably start appearing on Zune Marketplace around the same time as well.

The zune is much bigger than the ipod... I guess it all depends on your thought of marginally...

Pulled from the Apple site: 2.4 x 4.1 x .43 inches (30 GB model)

Pulled from the Microsoft site: 2.4 x 4.4 x 0.58 inches size (Zune)

.15" is pretty big when we're talking about something that is supposed to go into your pocket. Not to mention the .3" extra length.

I can see why someone would like an iriver, zen, or iaudio over the ipod. I have no idea how anyone can think the zune is better than the ipod. Much less a suitable gift. The one feature the zune has that I like is the wi-fi beaming of songs, but before that's even remotely useful you have to have a huge number of people with zunes.

MS missed the ball big time by making the zune incompatible with existing stores... WTF

Its not ugly and its only marginally bigger than an Ipod. You forgot to mention it has a bigger screen. I have no problem with DRM.

Oh, it's ugly alright. And I love iTunes and its DRM free music. :)

Way to generalise :p

The poll doesn't appear to support your bitter and cynical view of the world however.

I think it does support my view of this forum. The Zune is either unreleased or barely released and 45% say it's better than an iPod, which has led the industry for 5+ years?

No sh!t. I like how they mention unlimited downloads for $14.99/month, but for some reason they don't mention how much music you'll have after you cancel after a year. Oh yeah, that's right, ZERO!

If the DRM is anything similar to what I've been reading about in regards to Vista I might be inclined to stay way. That being said I watched the YouTube video of someone going through the interface. Looked pretty slick. I wouldn't mind seeing one in person.

My current player has 30gb and it feels crippling (especially if you have high quality rips), I hate having to decide what music to put on and what to take off. An 5.5G video and Zen Vision M is clearly the best option for only 50 bucks more for 60 gigs.

How many days of music do you need in one go?

I don't really get the whole, ZOMG 30GB is wai too small for a portable music player, thing.

It doesn't take a genius to swap files, or indeed very long and it would take you a very, very long time to listen to 30GB of music (FFS you have to charge the thing many times over listening to 30GB of sensibly encoded music).

Don't give me that ' i need rips that are BETTAR than the original' story either, you'll be listening to it on earbuds in a environment that isn't dead silent, so there's no way you need ridiculously huge encodes, or could possibly tell the difference :p

/rant.

how many days of music do you have to have on the go? ugh.. i'm sorry the killer app of the ipod is to have your entire library of music with you so you aren't limited to some short playlist, you can playwhatever, whenever, and without shuffling sh*t back and forth from your pc all the time which is just a hassle. theres plenty of reason for having a ton of space. its about ease of use.

well multiplying it out for volume,
4.23 cubic inches for ipod
6.12 cubic inches for zune. so its not just slightly larger.. heh
not exactly desirable trait, let alone for most women.

QFT...I possibly will be picking up the red one with an engraving for christmas. Either that or cheap out and get her a coach purse (cheaper than the ipod + decent headphones. I hate those damn white ones).

I used to have an Iriver H320. Although it also played videos and required NO SOFTWARE to import/export music. It's lack of accessories, support and ease of use (i got lazy) made me drop it for an ipod 5G. Although the audio quality is not as great (pretty close though). The larger screen, easy playlist generation, REAL SHUFFLE, and large screen got me hooked. Plus of course, accessories galore.

Either way, I do most of my quality listenings at HOME with either my computer or receiver. FLAC owns.

A bigger screen but with the same QVGA resolution. But you'll want to turn it sideways for photos/videos. What's the freakin' point?

I assume you have some sort of disorder that makes rotating a tiny device impossible or extremely challenging for you?

From what I've read about the zune, it's crippled and not really an improvement on things.
1. Bigger size, not a good thing
2. Bigger screen, but same resolution as Ipod
3. Useless wireless unless someone else has Zune too
4. Can't plug into computer to use as storage device
5. DRM everything

Well, I just ordered an ipod yesterday and it should be here tomorrow... my first mp3 player.

I chose it over zune cause I hate MS more than I hate apple, and MS DRM scares me, and the ipod is smaller, oh and also I'd never be able to fit all my music on a 30gb player, much less my music and a few movies. And ear buds can suck my butt. Full range noise canceling headphones ftw!

Hooray for my first ipod post!

Noise cancelling headphones are rubbish. Go for in ear noise BLOCKING canalphones if you want great sound.

I would definitely go with an iPod for your gf, probably a nano. The Zune is too new and surely has lots of kinks to be worked out. I do love the interface and rubberized casing though! Can't wait to see what Pyxis or Pixas or whatever looks like (MS-built Zune flash player).

Guess how many tracks Apple will let you re-download if your hard drive crashes? Oh yeah, that's right, ZERO! At least with a subscription service, you can start paying again and redownload whatever you had before.

the zune may have a bigger screen, but the rez is the same. as for the preloaded virus, it isn't apple's fault. it's foxconns. so that point is irrelevent. for a girl, and ipod with out a doubt. the zune does have wi-fi, but it's useless. it's also ugly.

Why would you need to re-download it? Just copy it off your ipod. Problem solved. The only way to get around the "cancel after a year" problem is to extract the DRM out of your music files, which can be done for some formats, not sure about the zune format.

There is so much hate for MS.

Unlimited downloads go away once you cancel your subscription? It's an extra service -- every company that offers that service does the same. If you want to keep it, buy the tracks, just like on iTunes. And people keep complaining about MS having DRM; since when did Apple not have any DRM on iTunes?

The Zune is nice, but I'm still more inclined to go with a Creative Zen
