I wonder if zombies instinctively avoid water or do they still blindly walk in. I figure they don't need air and such, so they could very easily bypass moats. Hence, a stout wall that could bear the incessent zombie scratching.
We'll need enough land to grow food too, since stored food can only sustain us for so long. We also have to consider if zombies ever do starve to death ala 28 weeks later, or are they good until natural bacteria/decay takes down their central nervous system. Prisons would be good areas to defend as well. Most have high walls with turrets, and are strongly built inside too. Also much more common then missile silos or castles.
