would you rather be dead or alive (even though you may be hurt by uv light and have a hunger for human brains)? :D

I personally welcome the super-human strength.

For the new treatment, the researchers used a virus related to rabies called vesicular stomatitis virus (VSV).

Wasn't the cure in I Am Legend based off rabies too? Haha that's awesome! I guess it's time to hit up home depot for necessary materials.

ya you aint kidding. i worked with the actual VSV virus a few years ago and the thing about that virus is that it can get into any cell as it doesnt utilize any protein receptors. it basically breaches the cell membrane directly. i like how they play it off as simply causing colds in humans, because that virus absolutely rocks other mammals including its major target livestock. the virus causes infected cells to go lytic (explode) anywhere from 4-24 hours. the virus is effectively cleared in humans because it is very sensitive to our immune response induced by interferon (produces RNA chewing proteins which destroy the RNA genome of the virus).

It would be very difficult to stem the degree of normal cell damage before the interferon response kicked in. Maybe it will destroy just enough to make a zombie.

Wouldn't matter, as the first zombies get tangled up, the next zombies can merely walk over the other bodies. Like how some kinds of ants would sacrifice themselves so the rest of the colony would have a walkway over water.

What you need are higher walls that would keep them out, but wouldn't kill them. You don't want a ramp being made.

Time to pick up a castle and/or missile silo.

Fill the silo with bullets and food. Spend your sunny summer afternoons sniping zombies.

This is actually a fairly old concept, using a virus to attack cancer cells, over even other viruses.

There was a House episode on this where the Hepititus virus attacked the tumor of a cancer patient, and it seemed like an act of god.

obviously we need super strong and super thin wire that is attached to mechanical equipment that moves the wires forward and retreats at a high rate of speed, with open-grates below for the gloriously shredded zombie parts to fall into, with an incinerator and waste-removal system so it doesn't pile up.
this is fool proof!

or... those awesome lasers from the hallway scene in Resident Evil. Can we do that yet? Why not just 'nuke' them with high power microwave defenses that can be turned on at the flip of a switch? they'd boil and burst!

Remember, we can't get too messy for fear of becoming infected ourselves. I vote for a super deep moat....with sharks.

Agreed. A very stout brick or stone wall enclosing the perimeter, with turrets at the corners, and surrounded by a line of industrial grade wood chippers sunk to ground level. Of course you wouldn't want to fire up the chippers unless it was a full scale zombie assault. :D

I'll compromise for turret-mounted lasers on the fortification wall.

...all this for just a fucking double-wide anyway. shessh.

Of course, completely passive defense woulnd't work.

I wonder if zombies instinctively avoid water or do they still blindly walk in. I figure they don't need air and such, so they could very easily bypass moats. Hence, a stout wall that could bear the incessent zombie scratching.

We'll need enough land to grow food too, since stored food can only sustain us for so long. We also have to consider if zombies ever do starve to death ala 28 weeks later, or are they good until natural bacteria/decay takes down their central nervous system. Prisons would be good areas to defend as well. Most have high walls with turrets, and are strongly built inside too. Also much more common then missile silos or castles.

They blindly walk in. They follow any sound there is. They can also survive underwater
