The first one is a rebadged Plextor 12x10x32
The second one is a rebadged Sanyo CRD-BP900P 12x4x32

Tip = the 12x4x32 CAN be updated with the Sanyo flash, to give the drive over-burn, and safedisk copy ability.

Warning = the 12x10x32 so far can't be updated with the plextor flash, so my guess is it has all the standard Iomega copy protection/over burn stuff inplace. Also without the flash you can't get the NEW 32 DAO Plextor/TDK gave the other 12x10x32 drives...

I do hope some talented soul writes a patch to this whole Plextor flash problem. (I can almost guarantee Iomega won't)

<< There are 2 rebates. One before Dec 31 and one after >>

It will be interesting to see what the 'official' rebate form indicates on CompUSA's rebate board tomorrow. If they only supply the 'new' rebate -- the one that starts on 1/1/2001, then purchasers who buy the drive tomorrow (12/31/2000) could argue to get the $30 on the spot because the rebate is not coincident with the sale dates. Again, this would only depend on the actual rebate form that is placed on the rebate board. Your mileage may vary, but it may be worth a try.

I was able to snag one from the Fair Lakes / Fairfax CompUSA this morning with the intent of going back to get the price adjustment tomorrow after the dust settles in the store. They had at least 10 on the shelves at this location a little after 9:00 A.M. this morning. This is a great time to shop -- nobody was out.

CircuitCity does 110% too... but their web site shows only the 8x model at $179... but who knows if they might have it in store. Any other places sell the Iomega's? Sears or something like that?

What exactly does "one per two customers" mean? Would I have to bring a friend on sunday just to buy one?

The crux of whether this is a hot deal or not really depends on whether the bios string can be changed to make it think it's a Plextor. I guess we've got a 2 week window for this to happen, or else mine goes back (yes I only bouth ONE!!). Iomega is suck. Does the fornt panel have the same arrangement as Plextors (i.e., 2 buttons & 2 lights). The IBM 32x SCSI CDROMs for overstock.com had a different physical layout from Plexs, and would have been hopeless to use Plex firmware with.

Just picked one up at CompUSA in Arlington, TX. There was still about 5 or 6 left when I was there.

Where are you guys getting $99. It looks like $299-150=150 minus the $30 rebate if you get it for $120. It does not look like you can get the rebate either.

Crew,

I will be damned! I live in Northern NJ, where the pilgrims still stretch their bony morals into out lives (ummm .... we stil have blue laws, stores are closed on Sundays), as a result we get all the Sunday deals on Saturday morning! And the sales dont start until Monday! So Ive got quit a cushion .... Regardless ... straight from the front page:

Not sure if this has been covered but it looks like the UPC on both rebate form matches the one I picked up this morning. So the rebate should apply no matter if you pick one up today or tomorrow.

I just downloaded the Plextor Firmware and looked at how it works. Looked at the .ini file it extracts (in the Temp directory), and it has the line:

Inquiry=PLEXTOR CD-R PX-W1210A;

Could the solution be as simple as changing this to match the Iomega drive's value?

Let me know if someone has tried this, or if I'm just so naive that it could be so simple.

If this drive is at all related hardware-wise to the Plextor, then this bit of insight from http://www.ping.be/satcp/firmwares01.shtml may also apply to the Iomega 12/10/32 drive. If someone has opened up their Iomega drive already, would they care to try steps #2 and #3 and let the rest of us know?

Creative 8432 firmware 1.07

The Creative 8432 is actually a rebadged Plextor 8/4/32 (with only 2MB cache). To be able to use CloneCD with this drive you must have firmware 1.07 installed. However, Creative does not provide firmware upgrades on their website and the Plextor firmware update will not work. Here's a work around:

1. Download the Plextor firmware upgrade utility PXUpgrade32 and the Firmware 1.07 Binary File for PX-W8432T .
2. Switch off DMA for the Creative. You can do this in the Device Manager.
3. Switch off the PC and turn it back on while holding down the Creative's CD tray open/close button, you will notice that the drive's light will be flashing and then on bootup it'll show up as a Plextor 8/4/32.
4. Once in Windows you can run the Plextor update program and flash the drive to firmware 1.07.
5. Turn on DMA again.
6. Reboot your system.

This is at your own risk, this may void warranty!

So can somebody verify whether or not this drive is capable of cloning various copyright-protect CDs?

I met another Anandtech shopper at CompUSA in Arcadia, CA. Thanks for showing me the AD. I had to run out and buy the Sunday's time. Sorry guys, no scanner or else I will post the AD.

It would have been better to Pricematch at Circuit City or Best Buy and get the additional 10% off but I checked couple of stores around here and they were all out of stock or OPENed box.
