MillerCoors LLC announced Monday that it will discontinue the clear malt beverage Zima, introduced by Coors Brewing Co. in 1992, because of "challenging malternative segment sales and declining consumer interest."

Production of Zima ceased Oct. 10 and remaining orders will be filled on a first-come, first-served basis using available inventory, chief marketing officer Andy England said in an e-mail. The last orders are expected to be filled in December.

The beverage was produced at MillerCoors' breweries in Golden, Colo., and Elkton, Va., spokesman Julian Green said.

The decision was made to reduce "complexity" in the brewer's brand portfolio, allowing it to focus on more preferred brands like Sparks, a malt beverage brand acquired by Miller Brewing Co. of Milwaukee in 2006. MillerCoors, the recently merged operations of Miller and Coors, is asking distributors to replace Zima on store shelves with Sparks and Sparks Plus four-packs and Sparks Light.

MillerCoors is a competitor of St. Louis-based Anheuser-Busch.

I always hated Zima. The only way I could drink it is if it was flat.

Haha, I used to do that, otherwise Zima tasted awful.

The first sip of a Zima was always good. By the third sip I was ready to throw it out.

My wife said we should pick some up for old time's sake.
I liked it because it was super-easy to chug and didn't taste foul like Bud Light/Busch Light/etc. I'd down four in fifteen minutes and have a sweet buzz :p

I now associate it with Futurama - "Wah, wah, wah. Baby wants a Zima"

Wait - they actually used the term "malternative" in an official press release?

Out of curiosity, do all the people saying Zima was so awful like any form of malt liquor?

When zima came out it was an entirely new segment for beverage alcohol - the malternative. The segment exploded with every spirits company racing to cash in on it. Some were good like jack daniels country cocktails and mike's hard lemonade. Most were just rushed to market just adding flavor chemicals.

It was similar to what happened when bartles and james came out with the wine cooler.

A flavored malt beverage is not the same as malt liquor. If you think Olde English 800 shares any similarities with Zima outside of alcohol, you're a fool.
