what the hell you think "JEDEC strap" means?
Dunno, one always have to decrypt your mumbo jumbo talk.

Not all CPUs support max JEDEC speed supported by a DDR5 stick. From where did you get that Zen6 will support DDR5 at 8000 JEDEC speed with default BIOS settings?

In general, that's probably a fare statement with respect to 1T. Here's the issue, that's going to be HIGHLY application dependent. There are some apps that will happily live in 48MB of L3 that weren't happy at all in 32MB that will do surprisingly well on Zen6.
X3D became really great brand and 8 cores cost is very reasonable, so I reckon a lot of people that choose it did not even need that sort of perf - it is totally necessary for high end GPUs, but if you get 9070XT then it might be wasted money, but it's so good and costs very little extra that people go for it.

Cache size wise I think the rule was something along the lines of: quadruple the cache to half the misses, obviously this is app dependent, but I doubt 50% increase in cache will make huge difference, just like going to 128 MB probably won't do much better, still noice to have!

And what of situations where 8 cores becomes a limiting factor? Having 12 cores in the same segment will improve things, especially for games that like to do a lot of background shader work.

Yeah, that will be a big reason to buy - unified 12 cores, can finally have game running well with some background crap chugging along. For me however no X3D = no sale.

Maybe you should try learning.
This is theoretically a technical forum, after all.

Gator Range platform docs.
This is freaking stupid. You use the esoteric term and then act like it's common knowledge when someone doesn't get the reference. It's a freaking profile. We all say profile. If you search for JEDEC strap you get a buncho static straps.

It's not esoteric at all.

Pretty sure every memOC autist says 'strap'.
In any case, it's a technical forum. Live and learn.
Yeah but this audience isn't all memOC ers. If someone asks for clarification, don't give them the runaround. We all have our knowledge base. I really think you're just afraid to explain things because once you get past the buzzwords, things get hard.

Dude, we've been using the term "straps" in the memory over clocking world for over a decade. Yes, it's been more commonly used to refer to GPU vram, but the usage isn't some esoteric grab from the ether.

Yeah and we use the term strap for data binding memory locations in programming. If I used it in a mixed audience and someone didn't understand it. I wouldn't shame them. I'd explain that they are initialization constraints to ensure proper startup. I probably wouldn't use it anyways. I would just say configuration.

I would expect more folks upgrading from <= Zen 4, than from Zen 5.
I'm still on Zen 3. Unless my DT stops working, I will not upgrade to Zen 6 because I believe that the socket will be end of life after Zen 6. Will wait until the next gen socket comes out with Zen 7 so I can upgrade at a later date without a mb swap.

I do wonder though, how many DIY builders are still out there. I do it because I have been able to reliably build a DT computer that lasts 10 years with this approach vs. buying a new laptop every 3-5 years. Still, seems like I am in a tiny sliver of a minority.

rumour is that AM5 socket will continue until zen 7

If you upgrade so infrequently, then even with extreme longevity of AMD platform, you will rarely get an opportunity to do CPU only upgrade. So, it really doesn't need to be a concern for you.

I tend to have a similar strategy, waiting for 2x CPU performance to upgrade, and I just happened to get Zen 4 (7800x3d), and in my case, CPU only upgrade to Zen 6 (or even Zen 7) will be quite an attractive proposition.
