Oh that's totally normal. Stuff may randomly go bonkers on the 8th, 17th and the 26th all over the world. It's also 17th here when my NIC had the issue. If it were up to me, I would declare these as public holidays so we can all stay home and deal with the wonderful random issues without also having to deal with work or school.
Irrelevant. It can be done from software inside windows, therefore it can be done by software inside windows.
Software is installed by the user and probably run with admin privileges to do that. But if the OS does it, it's gotta ask permission or get the user's consent. Otherwise, Microsoft will land itself in hot water.
Are you referring to the hot water Microsoft always gets into without repercussions every single upgrade by turning on (again and again) all levers for telemetry even though that's unlawful within Europe? You think they'll ask nicely and clearly when doing changes to the UEFI settings?
Collecting PC usage data is not as intrusive as messing with UEFI settings. Unless someone provides definite proof that Windows is indeed fiddling with UEFI settings or causing them to reset to default state, I'm not going to be convinced. My google search reveals that Windows CAN change the UEFI boot order. That's about it.

Yeah, as anonymous as mobile phone tracking data and the likes. So not anonymous at all as a whole, pseudonymous at best.
Any company will do what they can get away with easily. "Stealing" user usage data silently or PC refusing to boot and needing UEFI settings to be reset to default values (which a lot of users may not even know what that means or does, like pre-builts)? It's easy to see which would make the news more and Microsoft wouldn't dare do that (at least intentionally).
Oh right! I forgot corporations always follow the law and do what's right in the best interest of their customers.
I'm not defending Microsoft. Just saying that they wouldn't want the bad publicity of unbootable PCs by intentionally messing with UEFI settings, which in itself hasn't been shown to be true. My incomplete knowledge on the matter tells me that they can only make changes to the EFI system partition.
Well then what happened to my daughter's PC? She had been gaming for a few hours, everything was fine. Goes to shut down and tells Windows to update and it no longer boots. I know Windows did something because when I loaded the settings back in and rebooted it Windows was finishing updates. And of course it's been fine the last 2 days after reloading the settings.
Well, the best way to test that would be to roll back those updates, apply them again and see if it borks UEFI again. I don't think you would want to do that, though
I Finally picked up the 7800X3D bundle from Micro Center! I tried to ask the associate about open box components, but he didn't seem interested at all. At $470+tax, I'm okay with it. Rest of components came from Amazon and Newegg, so I'm all set. I bought an extra Samsung 980 PRO 2TB... maybe it'll go back to Amazon but damn it was so cheap ($70, open box) so I don't know what to do. 🤔
My store had tons of the MSI boards (over the weekend) along with lots of open box boards from the various bundles. I picked up a 7900X bundle and a 7800X3D bundle on Saturday. FYI to anyone looking to pull the trigger on any of the MC bundles......if you put the bundle items individually in your cart when you do your reservation the pricing on individual items will adjust to the bundle price. It seemed like they've had a hard time keeping the MSI PRO B650-P in stock at MC locations, but they had some on the shelf today. I had already reserved one of 3 yesterday so I was safe. Would have preferred to cajole them into offering me a slightly better board though. 😄
My last desktop PC was an Athlon XP (Barton) with GeForce 6800LE... haven't even tried booting it in about a decade. I suspect it still works, and I should repurpose it as a legacy Windows 98 gaming system.
