Z28 is back on?

they really should bring back the IROC-Z. That will be a monumentally joyous day for many Lebanese and Chaldeans folks.

It may steal a bit of the Corvette's thunder but I think the Z28 isn't going to be its direct competitor. This will land squarely against the Ford mustang GT500 though.

SS should be king of the hill.

uhhh...wat? Back in the 60's the RS and SS models were mainstream, the Z/28 was the King Camaro (1969 the Z/28 became its own car...I think...prior to this the first Z/28 1967 was a dealer manufactured conglomeration of GM racing parts).

For some reason they fucked that up in the 90's and 2000's, but I'm glad they got it right now.

This makes sense with where GM is headed with both the Camaro and the Corvette. The Camaro (RS/Z28/SS) will fill in the lower tier, and the Corvette will be a grade above. It already looks like the 2012 Corvette will be more expensive, and be better than the current entry-level Corvette.

so we should get the current gen C6 before it's too late???!??!??! [panic-bandwagon mode]

I'm kind of feeling the same way. With all the CAFE talk and C7 rumors (and confirmations, for that matter) I'm thinking the Corvette may have peaked in C6 form and from here out it's going to be a series of compromises.

I just wish I could get a 2010 in Atomic Orange, I hate having to choose between launch control & color.

You could always choose the cheapest paint option for the Corvette stock and get it custom done at an airbrush shop or something.

And also, I don't see the appeal. Henessy already did a Z/28 homage earlier this year, why should I get all excited about this car that probably doesn't look as good and produces less power?

Plus, the whole car should be scrapped and redesigned, the fucking morons in charge of the conversion from concept to reality really fucked up. That thing is so cumbersome and so pathetic I want to slap GM upside the head. What were they thinking?

You could pay Hennessey a fortune for his Z/28 and maybe you'll eventually see a car. The guy has a seriously shady history. Do a quick google search on 'Hennessey Crook' and see what comes up.

Also, how is the camaro a failure? In every comparison I've seen it's held its own against its competitors. They're selling like crazy. They apparently built what people want. It may not be your dream car but it is a financial success and is getting some very good press.

The Camaro will be a tough sell next year when it's up against the Mustang with updated engines. Even with the massive engine handicap, the Mustang has always outsold the Camaro...

Is it a financial failure? No, but neither are boring cars from Toyota and Honda. That is not the point. It's not a proper enthusiast car, whether you like muscle cars or sports cars. It's just a piece of shit that attracts people who want the 'looks,' if you can call them that.

How the hell can you call the Camaro a piece of shit? On what basis of comparison, because I would sure love to see that.

It's 4100 lbs, do I need to compare it to anything? It's a great big lumbering toad, and it and the Challenger are a disgrace to what the muscle car originally was designed to be.

so an additional 400 lbs over 40 years, with larger engines, while returning better MPG and better handling, is a disgrace to what a muscle car originally was?

The 4000lb pig is not going to compete with the vette, even if you steal the engine from the vette. You could possibly touch the vette's numbers by dropping the $45,000 ZR1 motor in it, but then you'd have a $70k 4000lb pig.

--edit-- to be fair I do like the looks of the Camaro, I'm just disgusted that they are building yet another 2 ton car that you can't get in if you're over 5'9"

You're mincing my words and looking for complain where there isn't. I never said anything about the engine of the car, I like that modern V8s are far more powerful relative to their consumption of fuel than those back in the 1960's.

However, all that speed is more or less neutered by the piggish weight. They should slim it down to Mustang levels, the Stang pulls it off great, why can't they?

Plus, I believe in most tests the Stang outmaneuvers both the Camaro and Challenger even though both have IRS, so no, it barely competes. The only way it's succeeding right now is because people are ignorant and they like the looks from "teh transf0rmerz"

Not really sure what the problem is here. The Camaro is faster but doesn't handle as well as the Mustang and the Mustang handles better but is not as fast. Big deal, it doesn't make the Camaro a POS, it's just limited by it's weight. The Camaro handles well and has great speed for it's weight which hopefully will be addressed sooner than later.

Right, but the Camaro isn't much faster than the Mustang, considering it has 110 horsepower more. When the new five liter engine and a 6'er get popped in the stang next year, and a boss gets dropped in at 2012, the Camaro will be crushed utterly.

The curb weight of the Camaro is 3750-3800 and the Mustang is 3534; that's basically just an extra person. 4000 is overstating the Camaro's weight a little bit; the 2002 Camaro was about what the Mustang currently is right now.

I can't speak to the height issues with the Camaro though; I have not tried to get in one yet. If that is true, it would be a major issue with the car for me (I am 6' 2''). I have plenty of room in my Z, and if a bigger car has issues with taller people, that is definitely a big drawback.

I too like the look of the Camaro; if they could have shaved-off a little weight, it would be a better car, but the car still handles OK, has great MPG, and decent power. Right now, this design will be popular with consumers who (mostly) would be more than happy with the power, despite the weight.
