Pretty ridiculous. It probably comes from all those people in NYC that like to bitch about bikes. Sure, there are definitely some assholes on bicycles, but plenty more car drivers or air-headed pedestrians that feel that they can walk when and wherever they want (in bike lanes, against the light, wandering into the street absent-mindedly).
I would love to see them enforce something like this... As if the cops don't have enough to do as it is.
If passed, DenDekker estimated the state would bring in more than $1.8 million in the first year and $375,000 each following year.
What happens when an out of state biker riders through?
Tow the bikes to the impound lot of course :sneaky:What happens when an out of state biker riders through?
Where did you guys live? I grew up in tax happy CA and never heard of bike licenses/stickers. That's just awful. Next they will tax our shoes.
Not true. My parents talked about having to do this in a relatively small town in Wisconsin when they were growing up. No, I don't have a source/reference, you'll have to take my word for it.
EDIT: Also, I agree that the idea is ridiculous.
Requiring bikes to be registered every year is commonplace for college campuses. You don't need a license plate though.Since that would make NY the first place in the... world to require license plates for 10-speeds,
They were required in my home town in Wisconsin from the 50s through the 70s. The city switched to stickers in the early 80s and finally gave up in the late 80s. $2/year.
Here's my commentary: New York can suck my balls if they think I'm going to pay for a license plate for my 10 speed.
SF/Bay Area here and I had the license stickers on my 10 speeds in the mid 70's to early 80's
What's next? License plates for skateboards? Rollerskates? What about Lolerskates? Yeesh...can't they just say: We're broke, getting broker (in the same dictionary as strategery), and we need to raise taxes. ?
Unreal.....
Chuck
Damage when a car hits your car: $20,000retarded, goes in opposite direction of promoting health and environment protection.
I can understand insurance though, here we have to get a sticker.
My city requires bike registration and a fee of $10. Annually.

Registrations are $10.00, with one exception: If your immediate family already has two bicycles registered in the City of Madison, then each additional registration fee is just $8.00
If big government is good, then bigger government is better, yes?
Yeah, I know, us libertarian kooks and our crazy notions of small government are stupid. Enjoy what you idiots have set up.
Very good idea. It will help to balance the budget and bicycles need to abide by the same laws as motor vehicles do. Few bike riders follow all the rules and sometimes their actions can and do cause problems. It will be easier to track the offenders this way.

You aren't being very progressive. If the government can be trusted with your health care, then it certainly knows better than you about this.
You need to embrace change.
