They were required in my home town in Wisconsin from the 50s through the 70s. The city switched to stickers in the early 80s and finally gave up in the late 80s. $2/year.

Pretty ridiculous. It probably comes from all those people in NYC that like to bitch about bikes. Sure, there are definitely some assholes on bicycles, but plenty more car drivers or air-headed pedestrians that feel that they can walk when and wherever they want (in bike lanes, against the light, wandering into the street absent-mindedly).

I would love to see them enforce something like this... As if the cops don't have enough to do as it is.

Disagree

If passed, DenDekker estimated the state would bring in more than $1.8 million in the first year and $375,000 each following year.

It's *all* about the money.

What happens when an out of state biker riders through?

Well, let's see. The proposed law requires a licence plate and inspection, correct?

I believe the fine for an "Unregistered Vehicle" in New York is $200, and failure to inspect is $50~$100. Therefore it stands to reason that bicycle trip would cost $250~$300 in tickets.

If the government required a $25 walking permit, you'd have all these sheep going into the government center to fill out the permit and pay their fee.

WTF. When are we going to throw people out of office? I suppose when the beer supply runs out and the football games stop airing on TV.

Maybe people should have to have a pedestrian plate since they are always crossing the street, and riding on buses. That is where NYC would make the most money.

In a way I can see the license for a bicycle, but I would only do that for Bikes costing over say $250.00 or so. I would make it a one-time fee. This would allow the cops to locate the owner of the bike after someone steals it and abondons it. A lot of bicycles can cost over $1,000.00. Maybe all bicycles should have a vin number also. Standard policy would be to auction off all abandoned bicycles once they have been stolen.

Where did you guys live? I grew up in tax happy CA and never heard of bike licenses/stickers. That's just awful. Next they will tax our shoes.

SF/Bay Area here and I had the license stickers on my 10 speeds in the mid 70's to early 80's

My city requires bike registration and a fee of $10. Annually.

Liberal Madison loves spending my money. They don't even plow the streets in front of my house unless there's been at least 2 inches of snow. Meanwhile, every other nearby town has clear streets.

Not true. My parents talked about having to do this in a relatively small town in Wisconsin when they were growing up. No, I don't have a source/reference, you'll have to take my word for it.

EDIT: Also, I agree that the idea is ridiculous.

Agree it's ridiculous and agree it's not unprecedented. I remember bikes in Dearborn having plates when I was growing up. I remember having to buy new tabs for it every summer. If you were caught by the cops they would take your bike (if they could catch you har har).

The next logical step will of course be to post speed limits specifically for bikes and to then set up speed traps at the bottom of hills... just think of the extra revenue! </sarcasm>

Since that would make NY the first place in the... world to require license plates for 10-speeds,
Requiring bikes to be registered every year is commonplace for college campuses. You don't need a license plate though.

Same where I grew up in California during the 70s. Never had actually plates though. The stickers were like car tabs.

Here's my commentary: New York can suck my balls if they think I'm going to pay for a license plate for my 10 speed.

You aren't being very progressive. If the government can be trusted with your health care, then it certainly knows better than you about this.

You need to embrace change.

What's next? License plates for skateboards? Rollerskates? What about Lolerskates? Yeesh...can't they just say: We're broke, getting broker (in the same dictionary as strategery), and we need to raise taxes. ?

Unreal.....

but soon it will be! :awe:

retarded, goes in opposite direction of promoting health and environment protection.
I can understand insurance though, here we have to get a sticker.
Damage when a car hits your car: $20,000
Damage when a bike hits your car: about $20 for some paint

If big government is good, then bigger government is better, yes?

Yeah, I know, us libertarian kooks and our crazy notions of small government are stupid. Enjoy what you idiots have set up.

In perfect irony, some day, they'll rise up against what they have created.

Very good idea. It will help to balance the budget and bicycles need to abide by the same laws as motor vehicles do. Few bike riders follow all the rules and sometimes their actions can and do cause problems. It will be easier to track the offenders this way.

We should raise the fee to a thousand as has been suggested. Pedestrians are also breaking laws. A placard of some type should be worn so we can easily track them. A modest fee of only a few hundred a year for each person who walks would also help balance the budget.

As usual, the government is the solution.

Do people really bother calling in plates of cars that "he cut me off in traffic" "he didn't signal a right hand turn" "He stopped over the crosswalk" etc.? And even if they did, do you really believe that someone is keeping track of this & cares?

Usually, when some idiot politician suggests something like this they at least try to pretend it (license plate in this case) would help with some existing problem.

I don't even see an attempt here.

It's looks like a shameless money grab.
