You're a computer geek?

Many of you, I'm sure, are on the computer a lot. Do you consider yourself a computer geek? If not, then what is a computer geek?

Spending a lot of time on the computer does not make one a computer geek. All of my coworkers spend 40 hours per week on the computer at work, but they are no computer geeks. They know how to use their specific software (MS Office, Hummingbird, etc), but that is all.

yeah sure y not, i'm a compute geek, but not becuase i spend hr after hr on here, cuz i know an follow computer related topics, and i know how to use a computer, but this damn thing everyone calls a mouse keeps pointing to differant things, its gettings really annoying, think i might put out a trap for it tonight

I consider myself computer literate, and I can do whatever I need to do on a computer basically, but I don't consider myself a geek because I know nothing about programming or computer logic.

I don't think I'm a computer geek at all.

I started with the Commodore 64 in 1985, had the tape drive, used to borrow the friend's floppy drive to play games. I used a 1200 baud modem to sign onto BBS's and chat with people much like I do here, I would download games and play online role playing games.

Then I got a PC, a 8088 "turbo" (10 mhz baby!) with CGA graphics, learned how to work on that, built myself a 386sx, 386dx, a screaming Cyrix 386-40, 486, Pentium 60 (yes, I had to get it as soon as it came out), Cyrix 6x86-166, Pentium Pro 200, Pentium 2 400, Athlon XP 2000+. I had a cable modem in 1996. Voodoo graphics in 1997. I used to install blue LED's in people's computers when they first hit the market. Went to Comdex with my old company in 1997 and got to chill in 3dfx's lounge and play Quake on the upcoming Voodoo2.

Let me take that back. I am definitely a computer geek, and a technology geek in general.

nice piece of history there marshall... you're such a geek! oh wait, I live in a perpetual state of building computers... mmmmm, geek land

Yeah, pretty much. Although I've been spending progressively less time on the computer, I've been able to do more. I build my own rigs, administer a home network (including running wires through walls), get involved with things like webdesign, flash (Actionscripting of course) and photoshop, and I do quite a bit of programming on the side. The fact that I'm even posting on this kind of forum is further testament to that fact. So, yeah, I'm pretty much a geek. I don't publicize it, but I'm not ashamed to admit I know computers.

I suppose I am a bit of a geek

I have 6 (working) computers
(4 regular pcs, 1 pIII laptop, and 1 mac laptop (old))
I use and have been using Linux for several years
I work at a help center where we help pharmacists with their computer problems at work, and yet I am known as the guy who knows how to fix/put together computers (isn't that something that the sysadmins are supposed to be?)
I have an Eggdrop running with several mods
I idle on IRC (undernet) with BX 24/7
I have withdrawl If i dont have my cable modem for more than a day or two (it sucks leaving my house .. hehehe)

I cant get enough of the net
.. hell .. I even have a linux fish on the back of my car

<- Hopeless geek

* I run Linux, and know how to do cool things with it
* Every computer in my house, save for 2, was built by me
* I have a working Commodore 64
* I have a nervous breakdown if the power goes out for more than an hour
* I have a somewhat less dramatic episode if the cable goes out for more than 2 hours

I built my own, and I am proud of it.
Great, that means you can do something a trained Monkey can do

A true Computer Geek is a Coder.

Yeah sure why not....I am not proud of it...nor ashamed...just one of those things.

I wanna see a monkey build a PC!! 😀

Few days back...I was sitting in front of my PC....bam...power goes out...off goes that "sigh...." power was only off for just over an hour...found myself twiddling thumbs....nothing to do!....and couldn't cook dinner!
