1. Deus Ex (by Leaps and Bounds!)
2. Doom2 (That game made me sh1t my pants)
3. Quake2 Custom Levels - Death Match (1st internet deathmatch game I played)
4. ALL the old "Gold Box" SSI AD&D games (That's all I played in the 386 days)
5. Diablo 1 & 2
I'm 40. I've bought and played
"hundreds" of PC games. As good as graphics are these days, they still don't stack up like they used to.
What it is, the textures and graphics engines were
very simple back in those days, so the programmers spent most of the time "writing a good game".
Now-a-days so much time is spent coding the graphics and effects engine and painting textures and making "levels", there's not much energy left in "writing a good game" is seems. Once in a while you get a "good one" at best, but that's about it.
I'm afraid that's what Doom3 is going to be. They've spend all these years perfecting the "graphics engine" and making it "pretty", I'm afraid the game itself will be not more than making your way "through another level" blasting everything in site.... until you get to the end and "kill the boss".
Maybe this time it will be John Carmack's head on a stick instead of John Romero's.

(The Boss in Doom2 was actually John Romero's head on a pole).
*Sigh*......I hope one day they "get back to the basics"
Cheers.
