The ones that annoy me are the ones that are always saying they built thier own computers, but don't know a thing about electrical engineering.

My friend is one of these. He always agrees to fix computers for people, and I undoubtedly end up fixing it for him all the time. As long as its little stuff I dont mind, but if it is something time consuming, I make him give me all the money he might get from the job.

my computer information systems teacher has been teaching the same subject for 30 years now.

1) She doesn't know how to use a spell checker to write her quizes. She spelled alphabet "phlabet".

2) She claims that Windows ME and Windows 2000 are the same product

3) She said I was wrong when I said there is a Windows 2003.

Makes you wonder

That is very depressing. I didn't know people were so stupid/ignorant. Seems to me it's impossible to find a well rounded knowledgable computer teacher. All the ones I have met are either very ignorant/or full of it, there are exceptions but I STILL knew more than them. Sighs

I used to build my own computers in HS but after I completed my freshman year of EE I just didn't give a sh!t anymore, so I bought a Dell rather than waste time building. My roommate would occasionally have semi-geeky friends over and every time they were like, 'omg you bought a DELLLLL!!!!!!1111111!!! ur stupid why dont you build it.' That pisses me off just as much as 'omg you bought intel you support the DEBIL!" comments I get.

I don't give a sh!t. There's nothing diffult about plugging cards into sockets that someone with an eighth grade knowledge couldn't figure out. Someone building a modem from scratch deserves respect; plugging cards into sockets does not. It's not hard and it doesn't make you l33t

I'm Very confused by your message. You say the people who build systems from scratch deserve respect while people who plug in cards into sockets do not. Do you mean people who take already built systems and plug in stuff or are you saying building a machine isn't a big deal at all... The kodos I give are to people who can build an 8088 from scratch including setting up the controller to detect the drive and setting all the IRQ settings and whatnot. I can do that stuff but the HDD thing and controller stuff I have never tried to mess with because I'm worried I may screw it up. I have an 8088 at home but have never tried to format it and it wouldn't be worth doing anyways.

See look.. 10 minutes later the kid gives up, "its just a stupid computer who cares". "your all stupid. (Runs off). Sadly enough since where I lived has a population of real computer nerds <20 even the school tech was just as dumb as the rest of the kids (not surprised either). Which is where I thought of the http://forums.anandtech.com/me...0417&enterthread=y thread because even back in highschool I could think of a smart russian programmer/power user. He was there temporarily though so I guess the school population of knowledge went down to 1 (me) and I'm not even a programmer! It was the suburbs and the school's population was 1800 students, pretty sad to me. Out of all the kids, I know probably 500 Really well and the rest either semi well or not at all.

Oh my god, I've ran into the same people in my HS! You just gotta punch 'em on the arm for being so stupid.

What are you talking about? My message was perfectly clear.
'System builders' that plug cards into sockets require skills slightly above that of scratching your ass. It just isn't a complicated thing. On the other hand, someone that can fabricate functional communication devices from lesser electronic components does deserve respect - in this particular example.

I get the general feeling you're clueless, judging from your message. It just doesn't make sense whatsoever....

Ah I didn't think you were speaking of from the ground up. Yes I guess I would give those people respect but I wouldn't think YOU or anyone would be able to fabricate an AUDIO processor to create your own sound card. So....

Or the oh so irritating people who say they "went" into someone's computer to "get the code" to make websites. Sure, yeah, you right clicked, view source, and saw a notepad document open up and stole the code. That IS NOT "going into" someone's computer.

No. You can't 'fabricate them.' But you can understand the principles behind the analog amplifier and the correct stages and frequency responses to handle the analog signal; you can understand the transforms required to move them into the frequency domain and the math required to do so; you can understand the principles behind the signal conversion into digital and the sampling requirements to get a good signal; and then you could understand the architecture required to move the new signal within a digital system and get it into a form where it could be processed and analyzed for whatever you are looking to do with it.

According to your example, you couldn't 'fabricate' an 8088 or whatever you said in your original post. You don't 'fabricate' things on a single-unit scale.

I made a "tub girl" registry virus once. I wouldn't call it a virus cause you've got to run it from that persons comp... but it makes their background tub girl, makes it so they cant access control panel, cant right click the desktop, and permantently changes their background to tub girl... and even if they figure it all out, the program runs itself again after 20 days, and resets the registry values. I made it for a kid on my hall, we had a tub girl war.

I knew a guy in HS that was a total idiot when it came to computers... He used to talk about how his system was faster then mine because his dad is in the Navy and they get better hardware before all of the world. Turns out his dad just bought some cheapy system from TigerDirect and told him it came from the Navy... he was such a retard. I had built mine part by part and decided each part by hundreds of reviews...

Everytime I talked to him he would tell me about how he hacked doom himself and made different sprites for the monsters and such... which was just a freakin mod he downloaded and extracted.

I moved away from his house (he was a neighbor sadly) and put him on ignore on icq/aim and never told him where I moved years ago, was a good descision.

Most of those people that are the source of today's viruses, aren't even writing the virus themselves.

They take a pre-written viruses and modify as to where it resides, what it effects, etc.

Finding a virus and modifying to put "I am a ATOT fanboy" on someone's desktop does not make you virus writer.
