I've never read the bible. I've picked it up a few times at a couple hotels, and I think once I used it as a coaster, but never read anything in it.

"All ye eat at Joe's..."

Well, most of the old testament was written in Hebrew, and the new testament was written in Greek. Both are accessable languages for a modern day student.

It was originally written in Hebrew, Aramaic, and Greek -- all languages still in use today. Comparisons with recovered ancient texts, like the Dead Sea Scrolls, show that the modern texts are extremely accurate.

edit: most of the translation issues are due to linguistic and cultural differences over the millenia. For example, the original ancient Hebrew doesn't say that God created the Heavens and Earth, it says that God filled the Heavens and Earth. And the ancient Hebrew word translated into English as spirit or soul actually means breath. Things like that.

2 Kings 2:23-25

23 From there Elisha went up to Bethel. As he was walking along the road, some youths came out of the town and jeered at him. "Go on up, you baldhead!" they said. "Go on up, you baldhead!" 24 He turned around, looked at them and called down a curse on them in the name of the LORD. Then two bears came out of the woods and mauled forty-two of the youths. 25 And he went on to Mount Carmel and from there returned to Samaria.

Galatians 6:11

11See what large letters I use as I write to you with my own hand!

Not my favorite, but a couple i found hilarious...

This says it all for me, it helps me to put everything into perspective.

Ecclesiastes

That which has been is that which shall be; and that which has been done is that which shall be done: and there is no new thing under the sun. 1:10 Is there a thing of which it may be said, ?Behold, this is new?? It has been long ago, in the ages which were before us. 1:11 There is no memory of the former; neither shall there be any memory of the latter that are to come, among those that shall come after.

Hey, I am an atheist, but that does not mean I do not appreciate the bible, and I in fact love a couple of the lines from it.

Issiah 6:8
Then I heard the voice of the Lord saying,
"Whom shall I send? And who will go for us?"
And I said, "Here am I. Send me!"

What's your favorite?

It's a very good book in many ways... interesting accounts of history, bits of timeless wisdom, etc. The problem is when people try to use it as a tool to dominate.

I love the scene from "Saved" where Hillary is trying to do an intervention on Mary and she whacks Mary with her Bible. Mary holds it up to her and cries, "This is NOT a weapon!!!"

Psalm 82:6 (King James Version)
I have said, Ye are gods; and all of you are children of the most High.

Luke 17:21 (KJV)
Neither shall they say, Lo here! or, lo there! for, behold, the kingdom of God is within you.
(that calls each of us to deepest meditation)

The Gospel of Thomas (Nag Hammadi Library)
(3)Jesus said, "If those who lead you say to you, 'See, the kingdom is in the sky,' then the birds of the sky will precede you. If they say to you, 'It is in the sea,' then the fish will precede you. Rather, the kingdom is inside of you, and it is outside of you. When you come to know yourselves, then you will become known, and you will realize that it is you who are the sons of the living father. But if you will not know yourselves, you dwell in poverty and it is you who are that poverty."

and (as brought to my attention by Joseph Campbell's writings):

(113) His disciples said to him, "When will the kingdom come?"
<Jesus said,> "It will not come by waiting for it. It will not be a matter of saying 'here it is' or 'there it is.' Rather, the kingdom of the father is spread out upon the earth, and men do not see it."

Yay! It is always good to see that there are others who see it that way.

<---me too!
