So my system is dated, not worth upgrading with all the changes over the recent years. But it still works fine. Just outdated (don't even have usb2/firewire currently)
I generally don't like replacing things that still work, but new games coming out soon that I'll need more power.
Do you sell them, give them away to family/friends, keep them somewhere in the house as a backup, make a home server out of it.....

I'm most likely buying a new system very shortly. Just curious what most of you do with your old one.
Gonna miss this system, so many hours of entertainment :(

build a new comp with that and put windows xp with minimum graphics (classic windows desktop) no bg, no screen saver) to ensure fast boot and speeds

always great to put all the extra hard drives you have laying around together into one PC.. make a sort of MEDIA PC for all your songs, movies and files and such. Thats what i did with my old PC -

AMD Athlon 900 mhz
512 PC133 RAM
80 GB WD
20 GB maxtor
20 GB Quantum (Dont ask.. never heard of it but i got it out of my mothers Compaq)
ATI Radeon 9250(AGP ofcourse)

some options I've done in the past:
1. sell the salvaged parts
2. rebuild and hand down to family/relatives
3. rebuild and use as a data server/shared storage system
4. use as stand-alone 24-hour torrent system
5. drop them off at local school or GCF (Goodwill charities)

LOL, great question.

I know a lot of the AT crowd sells off their "old" parts, but for me I just hold on too long. For example, my last cpu was a 2500 XP Barton that I bought for $99 when the 3000s XPs were out. The thing is I couldn't get anthing worth my while out of it in cash, so I'm giving it to my 8yr old, who hasn't even pushed the limits of her current 1800 XP on a Soyo Dragon with RAID 0 and a Hercules Prophet III, which will now to my 4 yrd old son. What happens after that? I guess I just keep shifting them down until they don't run anything and then junk 'em in the trash.

i would suggest you still keep any PCs after you have sent them through your family line. You can use them for word processing or as a house hold media server like i said before. I still use my 486 from time to time when the woman is on my PC... as much as i dont like her being on it i cant afford to build another PC lol

I did have about 6 old computers, all p II slot 1 crap, but i am down to two of the p IIs. I just pick the best parts out of all of them and solvage what is worth my time.

So out of 6 p IIs i now have a 450mhz and a 400mhz left. The only real PC i have is a P4 3.2

All my upgrades go through a specific line :p

Old parts from my just upgraded comp go into my second comp
Parts from my second comp i upgrade my brothers comp
Parts from my brothers comp i use to upgrade my parents comp
The left over parts from all the upgrades i sell for spair cash (funds food for like 2 weeks:p)

i use my second comp just as a internet router, software tester cause i dont really care if it stuffs up etc, and i usually leave it on most the time. In fact i'm using my second comp now :p.

Basically..you don't build a totally new computer

The name of the game is....UpGrade

You upgrade and sell/give the old parts away...make web surfer boxes for family/friends

my computer list goes like this... what was new gets repurposed

NEW
3200+ a64 = new pci-e gamer (7800gt 2gb)
dual slot opteron 246 = in process of building new linux workstation
3200+ a64 lappy = (dual boot xp home, and fedora core 4 64bit)

OLDER
3200+ a64 = secondary gamer w. 6800NU (media workstation 8000+ picts from my digital rebel 300d)
k2-500 system = smoothwall firewall
xp 2500+ linux file/domain server, and website test point before publishing to hosting company
p 200 mmx = was firewall now off

the 2500+ will soon be an edubuntu box, and my dual slot opty will replace the web/server functionality.

about to buy a cheap router and segment the whole dam thing so i can practice hacking for my cert exam soon :)

Was the Quantum the giant hard drives that they had in some Compaqs up to the ~1.5ghz range?

I sell the video card in most cases and migrate the Audigy 2 ZS to the new build. The rest of it becomes a server for Forgotten Battles/Ace Expansion Pack/Pacific Fighters combined install.

I made mine into a linux file server/web browser for my friends/guests to use. It boots fast, hasn't crashed yet(unlike w98), and it's much harder for noobs to screw up, get viruses on, etc.
