For me it's more about the technology that will be accompanying the 4k resolution, which would be >60Hz refresh rate, IPS or OLED panel, GSync or whatever version of that tech we have in 3 years.

I imagine it would be very pricey, but a 30" or 37" 4k OLED monitor with a high refresh rate would be the sweet spot for me. GSync would be icing.

Just got one of them 1440p IPS screens and not looking back. A combination of 4k, Gsync, affordable and decent quality is probably not gonna happen within the next years. Yes, years, as in plural of year.

Considering triple 1440P instead of 4K, unless 4K monitors drop in price quite steeply. Also depends on when 20nm high end GPUs show up, not going from 1 to 3 1440P at 28nm.

My guestimate in buying one would be about 2 years. Would have to buy a new desk too :D. By that time I think GPUs would have a resonable chance of handling gaming at that res at modest settings. If not, then a nice 2560x1600 unit will do fine.

No. I want a 27-inch 2560x1440 IPS display that runs at 120Hz natively, contains the Gsync module AND either has a natively available low persistence mode or is LightBoost compatible.

Earliest would be 2016 depending on how powerful Volta is. 1080p is still challenging for high end cards right now, I'll just settle on a IPS/equivalent sync monitor at 1080p or 1440p that can go up to 120~ Hz.

Not sure I'll ever go 4K. Just bought into 2560x1600+1200x1600, and might add a second 20" if I get a decent deal, but having splurged this badly, I don't think new screens are in the stars for the next 5 years, at the least.

And even then, I'll still try to get something with a 2.35-2.5:1 ratio, as wide screen are better screens - if they provide sufficient height.
So if there's ever a nice 4096x1600 screen, then I might have a go at that. In 5 years. If it has decent homogeneity and color. And costs less than 3k.

I'm not expecting to try 4K until the generation of cards after Maxwell. I'm more interested in G-Sync right now. Add me to the list of 1440p 120Hz G-Sync monitors. But who am I kidding, since we don't even have 1440p 120Hz yet.

Definitely not in the next 2 years. Not because I don't want one but because there's not a snowball's chance in hell that they will support 120hz by then. If I upgrade my current 1600p monitor I want to go up from 60 to 120hz too. And current 4K monitors are 30hz, which is so crappy that it should be illegal </rant>.

I think most users are waiting for affordability. 4k is far from mainstream at this point, although it is assuredly going to happen since the new uHDTV standard is going to be based on 4k.

Helloooo big *censur* affordable 4K screen. I'd like a big screen in the living room that could double as a monitor for the main rig when I have the house to myself, gaming, coding, whatever ... would be awsome (1080p is just a tad too small)

I would put this right in line with the cheap korean IPS panels, except this is way worse. There's no way 4k is desirable with 30hz refresh....

The actual good 4k screens will cost quite a bit more.

Not to put too fine a point on it, but stop repeating this false information. If you connect a single HDMI cable to it, yes, it'll be 30hz. Connect two, and you have 60Hz. A single DisplayPort is also 60Hz.

Whether you have the GPU power to hit 60fps is another matter, just remember that several manufacturers have announced sub-1000 dollar 4K displays for 2014. They are coming, so you posters claiming you're going to buy one when its under 3K USD might be spending money much earlier than you think. :p

I'd buy one today if I could. Using a 1080p screen is only 1/4 of the fun when I'm coding.

Not from any manufacturer any of us have heard of. All the grade A manufacturer are charging $3500 or more right now. There is no way any of them are suddenly going to start selling sub $1000 models next year. Even if by some miracle they could, they're not going to so they can preserve profit margins on the new tech. Panasonic just announced a 20" 4k tablet that's going to retail for $6000 in the US. Compared to other highend tablets, the only real difference in specs is the screen. So the vast majority of that cost is going to screen. But next year we're going to see grade A panels for under $1000. Right...

It's one thing to take a chance on a $350 Korean 1440p monitor. It is something entirely different to take a chance on a $1000 monitor.

none I'll go 4K when I can get a decent display and video card to play games on it for less than $500-600.

I have 3x2560x1600 and 3x1920x1200, so I'm set on monitors for a while. It would be nice if I could get a card that could do all six, or even the three 30s well. My 680 just can't hang.

Yes if 60hz 27" good quality at 1500usd arive. I am dead tired of the low ppi. But not for gaming purpose. I would prefer well calibrated oled :)

Also bright 4k dlp projector if the content starts to come. But thats probably more years yet.
