That would be the VIDEO. The song? Trent is far more powerful than Johnny Cash.

Yes & No. Johnny was much older and less healthy. Really happened toward the end of his life. Johnny did real good with that song in his own unique way. Tough to compare the two because they sound similar but are very different.

No doubt that Johnny did an amazing song. It's probably a top 10 cover of all time. I don't count the fact that it was at the end of his life or anything like that. Trent was literally in a downward spiral of drugs and self abuse. The song feels more powerful because it was written in the middle of chaos. It's true Johnny when through some of the same negative experiences, but I just enjoy the NIN version. The manipulated/distorted acoustics to start. The quiet periods in the song. The drums. Then you have the ending with the heavily distorted guitar, quite painful, it all makes sense. Nothing against Johnny, but Trent nailed that song and entire entirely.

I'd venture to say Pantera's Suicide Note Part 1 & Part 2 (while vastly different songs) are very dark in nature.

Then there is this. The last songs Alice In Chains recorded. Layne showed up and everyone thought he was a homeless guy and didn't recognize him. They ended up having to rewrite lyrics because he had lost so many teeth due to heroin usage, that he was able to pronounce words in his own song.

While the songs my not be depressing, holy shit, the story is. RIP Layne.

oh don’t take me wrong I agree I like the faster temp of trents version. Johnnys take on the song was amazing and very unexpected.

I want this played at my funeral.

Just to remind everyone one last time that you have bad taste in music?

Sorry, Violent Femmes Country Death Song is darker than that.
A song about a poor farmer who cant feed his kids, so he takes his youngest daughter out and kills her by pushing her down a well ,then hangs himself in the barn,

Sounds a bit like the Ballad Of Hollis Brown(B Dylan).

Hollis Brown
He lived on the outside of town
Hollis Brown
He lived on the outside of town
With his wife and five children
And his cabin brokin' down

You looked for work and money
And you walked a rugged mile
You looked for work and money
And you walked a rugged mile
Your children are so hungry
That they don't know how to smile

Your baby's eyes look crazy
They're a-tuggin' at your sleeve
Your baby's eyes look crazy
They're a-tuggin' at your sleeve
You walk the floor and wonder why
With every breath you breathe

The rats have got your flour
Bad blood it got your mare
The rats have got your flour
Bad blood it got your mare
If there's anyone that knows
Is there anyone that cares?

You prayed to the Lord above
Oh please send you a friend
You prayed to the Lord above
Oh please send you a friend
Your empty pocket tell you
That you ain't a-got no friend

Your babies are crying louder now
It's pounding on your brain
Your babies are crying louder now
It's pounding on your brain
Your wife's screams are stabbin' you
Like the dirty drivin' rain

Your grass is turning black
There's no water in your well
Your grass is turning black
There's no water in your well
Your spent your last lone dollar
On seven shotgun shells

Way out in the wilderness
A cold coyote calls
Way out in the wilderness
A cold coyote calls
Your eyes fix on the shotgun
That's hangin' on the wall

Your brain is a-bleedin'
And your legs can't seem to stand
Your brain is a-bleedin'
And your legs can't seem to stand
Your eyes fix on the shotgun
That you're holdin' in your hand

There's seven breezes a-blowin'
All around the cabin door
There's seven breezes a-blowin'
All around the cabin door
Seven shots ring out
Like the ocean's pounding roar

There's seven people dead
On a south Dakota farm
There's seven people dead
On a south Dakota farm
Somewhere in the distance
There's seven new people born

Kept forgetting to post in this thread...kept forgetting about it.
