No doubt that Johnny did an amazing song. It's probably a top 10 cover of all time. I don't count the fact that it was at the end of his life or anything like that. Trent was literally in a downward spiral of drugs and self abuse. The song feels more powerful because it was written in the middle of chaos. It's true Johnny when through some of the same negative experiences, but I just enjoy the NIN version. The manipulated/distorted acoustics to start. The quiet periods in the song. The drums. Then you have the ending with the heavily distorted guitar, quite painful, it all makes sense. Nothing against Johnny, but Trent nailed that song and entire entirely.

I'd venture to say Pantera's Suicide Note Part 1 & Part 2 (while vastly different songs) are very dark in nature.

Then there is this. The last songs Alice In Chains recorded. Layne showed up and everyone thought he was a homeless guy and didn't recognize him. They ended up having to rewrite lyrics because he had lost so many teeth due to heroin usage, that he was able to pronounce words in his own song.

While the songs my not be depressing, holy shit, the story is. RIP Layne.
