the time will soon come that the advancement of progressive politics will be a political feasibility again. I also look foward to seeing what sort of political realignment comes out of this, i have a feeling there will be a strong one.
Good sentiment but you and I will both be long gone before the south has fully changed. I used to think that the intolerance would die with this generation but now think it will require several generations to atrophy. Actually, it would probably continue forever if it weren't for the dilution caused by migrating foreigners (yankees and westerners). There is still mighty strong racial hatred here.

The South has already changed. What state gave us the first popularly-elected black governor? How many black congressmembers are from the South? Watch on 11/4 how may southern states Obama wins. Sure, there will forever be isolated pockets of racism, but they're getting more irrelevant by the minute.
Of course, the south has changed. But before I moved here, I wouldn't have believed that many in the south are still fighting the civil war. There are some weak and some strong black leaders in the south, just like any other part of the country. I don't want to discourage optimism - I hope I'm proven wrong in my prediction that the hardcore southern states will all go republican for president. I also predict 11/4 will be very tense here with voter challenges with the new id laws.

I still hear some people lament that huckabee didn't get the nomination. Religion is the other can of worms here.

I'll finally have the chance to say "Not my President!" and wonder why on earth people would vote in a racist black man with ties to domestic terrorism.

You KNOW the R's have fucked up very, very badly when someone like that can beat your candidate!!

Why did you support the current President who has associations with international terrorists? I can link to Rummy shaking hands with Saddam, a very bad man indeed. We had to get him once he bit the hand that fed him.

Ties to domestic terrorists. Oy.

Well, damn the American public for electing Saddam.....

If you dont see the difference between international relations and who we vote for internally I dont know what to tell you.

The point was that he was associated with Saddam Hussein, not that GW was a terrorist (personally, i believe no man on earth has done more to aid and create terrorists than GW Bush and i should fucking know).

I got this from what i heard, Obama wants to play hardball with Pakistan and tell them that what we are already doing is what we are doing, McCain won't sit down and talk with the government of Spain (an ally that is active here in Afghanistan) but has no problem spending years talking with Pakistan while we are getting killed by ISI and Talibans.

Obama is the only alternative regardless of what issue you have.

Personally, I'm at a point where I don't care who wins. McCain has lost me over the past month, and I don't see much difference in his impact as president than Obama's impact. Neither are what we need economically. However, I think what frightens me most is the cult-like following he has. I've heard phrases like "a palpable sense of hope", "a new America", and "spreading the wealth."

Am I the only one disturbed by this?

McCain has the religious right, that is far more fucked up than anything Obamas followers could muster even if they tried their damndest.

Ye have little faith in the secret service. There will be attempts and each one will be traumatic since we're so sensitized. But, remember even the most 'beloved' president ever - reagan - was targeted. I have heard there are 20,000 threats/year and have been for years. They know what they're doing.

He is the messiah after all. What did you expect? ;)

Personally, I enjoyed Christopher Hitchen's endorsement of Obama in Slate. He called Obama "vastly overrated" (so very true), but better than McCain, so Obama wins by default.

One party control worries me. It sucked under the Repubs, I certainly don't expect any better under the Dems. Washington DC seems to corrupt.

No, you are not alone. We cannot question Obama now, as a candidate with little/no chance of losing; what will it be like when he is in office?

(Oh, and you left out the part about how he sends "tingles" up the legs of our MSM.)

See bolded

The religious right isn't going to be running the country for the next 4 years. A wholly unproven Obama backed by a Democratic legislative branch WILL BE.

I'm a little unfamiliar with the phrase "taking the piss," but the Left has been passing the Kool Aide around and the bowl was bone dry when it got to me. I'm therefore left to wonder what - aside from Obama being black - there is to be so weak-in-the-knees about.

That he's a highly intelligent, highly educated, level headed pragmatist at a time where we could sorely use every one of those attributes. His being black has nothing to do with why he would be a good president. What is historic about this is that finally someone who is black isn't being disqualified for that reason alone.

What can the Dems do, really? Last time they held all the cards, they couldn't even get universal healthcare passed and still lasted all of two years in power. They've elected as Speaker an absolute out-of-touch dingbat, and their hands are severely tied fiscally. They'll inherit a mess of problems, and they'll only be able to blame it on the prior administration for so long before that whine gets old. I really can't envy their position.

Yeah, those hundreds of millions spent on abstinence only education aren't real tax dollars. Jesus gives them to the government at the start of each fiscal year.

I'm sorry, excuse me for my English, i'm English, see.

The religious right has been running the US into the ground for 8 years, started one war with NO justification, kept it up and in the REAL war on terror (i'm in Afghanistan ) we got as much as is spent in three weeks in Iraq, yet our challenges are greater, the population is greater, the surface is greater and it's HERE Al Quaidas headquarters are, it's in *points* those mountains Bin Laden is.

But skip that, play along like the stupid little partisan twat you are and for the love of fuck, don't forget to jump when they tell your ignorant arse to jump.

Here's an idea: grow the fuck up, cut the shit, and familiarize yourself with the individual you're speaking to and what their stances are before you toss your lunch.

You keep trying to place all of this in the context of the religious right and the past 8 years. Here's a newsflash you little cumstain: those years are behind us. They're irrelevant in terms of the next president. I don't give a fuck about a McCain presidency because 1) I don't support McCain and, more importantly 2) he's not going to be elected.

I don't care about the religious right at this moment because, while they've been my problem for the past 8 years, they're not my problem for the next 4.

Get it?

I don't know, but other parts surely are. The religious right is such an overblown bogeyman, it's just sad every time they get trotted out to scare the dim-witted people on the left. It's like the right overusing the terrorist bogeyman - the whole act is tired. Last I checked, porn, alcohol, tobacco, divorces, and books by Charles Darwin were all readily available, and my kids (like I was) were being taught evolution in their public schools. Gays still can't marry, but that'll change soon enough. The bottom line is, I don't fear the churchgoers around me, and I live in a pretty "red" area. At least when religious people come to my door seeking donations, I can tell them to shoo, but the taxman won't take no for an answer. The irreligious left on the other hand is forcing me to be a part of a retirement program (SS) against my will, wants to confiscate my guns and real property (if a private developer wants it - see Kelo v. New London), and thinks state-sponsored racism (affirmative action) is just wonderful.

So you'll agree the gov't shouldn't be in the sex-ed business at all, and should just return the money to the people? Somehow, I'm guessing not.

Seems like the residual effects from the previous administration would have *everything* to do with the next one. It'll take at least a year just to determine how fucked we really are.

Make no mistake: we're plenty fucked. But the same folks who can't look Obama in the eye without blushing also believe our economic crisis is largely (or even wholly) attributable to Bush. That's dangerous thinking.

Don't you just love seeing the Right squirm?

They are doing everything in their power to discredit Obama on Day 1. Most Americans understand the importance of Obama winning this election goes well beyond a Democrat finally winning an election. Minorities in this country have made substantial progress in the last century or so, but the White House has always been reserved for the privileged white. To see a man who grew up in Hawaii on food stamps to an interracial family with a name like Barack Hussein Obama win the Presidency is a testament to how far this nation has come. I understand the importance of it, and I hope you can put your petty partisan differences aside on this as it transcends either Party.

And he hasn't yet much real practical experience in either of those fields. Normally, someone with a degree but little actual experience knows just enough to be dangerous.

He does speak and write (I assume - don't know how much editing his books underwent) well, though.

No offense, but IMO the last thing we need in Washington DC are more lawyers with a Poli Sci undergrad degree - can't throw a rock there without hitting one.
