This is known as the Death Road and it is located in Bolivia. Many people have died crossing it.

I've seen some high mountain roads in India. The one in Bolivia is just amazing, in every way. I can't imagine the courage it would take for a driver there. I'm sure you would get used to it, but still. There are countries out there where this is just normal.

When the roads are so narrow, and huge vehicles have nowhere to turn, it must make for an interesting and dangerous scene.

I guess they don't have money to pave it and make it safer. There is no reason that people should die because of poor engineering (or lack thereof).

Who needs stopping sight distance, passing sight distance, horizontal lateral clearance, etc etc? Civil Engineers w00t w00t.

I heard they turned the road into a one way to cut down on the number of deaths. It changes directions every few hours I think.

That fourth picture down is insane. The truck's tires look like they're hanging half off the edge!

I worked with a guy in the early 80's who had just returned from building a road in Bolivia. MAY have been that exact one. Crossed mountains at something like 17000 feet...considered to be the most difficult road the contractor had ever built, due to conditions (elevation and weather) and the condition of the mountains where they built the road.
Not paving the road has little to do with cost, but more to do with cost of maintenance of a paved road at that elevation. Heavy snow and sub-zero temps cause frost heaves and potholes that are costly to repair in a paved road, where a gravel road you just fill them in with more gravel...

You should see the roads in Dharamsala in India. They look practically the same.
