Is that a tour bus???? That's one damn tour I'm not taking! I was on a bus tour in New Zealand once and our driver almost drove off the side of a mountain, and that was a two lane road. No thanks on the one lane.

Add to that the Latin obsession with passing around curves, and yes, it does get pretty interesting.

<--grew up in Ecuador:D

Machismo FTL when it comes to driving trucks+buses...

I've seen some high mountain roads in India. The one in Bolivia is just amazing, in every way. I can't imagine the courage it would take for a driver there. I'm sure you would get used to it, but still. There are countries out there where this is just normal.

When the roads are so narrow, and huge vehicles have nowhere to turn, it must make for an interesting and dangerous scene.

My commute's worse - I have to go into Baltimore.

I've been on a scarier road than that. It was a road we took to a lake up in the mountains. On one stretch we were literally driving on the side of the mountain like those in the pictures. Unlike that road this one was much narrower and barely wide enough for our pickup truck. The driver barely had enough room to step out cause it was so narrow. So we're traveling on this road going up at about a 30 degree incline around a blind corner and here comes a full size pickup coming the other way. No way in hell would we get by each other so either we back down or he backs up. I believe I read that it's safer in these situations for the vehicle coming down to back up. The other car refuses to so we had to back up about 1/4 mile down this incline until the road widen up a bit to let the truck through. Everytime we hit some loose gravel I'd almost crap my pants cause the truck would slide back a bit from loosing traction. If we strayed about a foot to the side we'd be rolling 3000ft or so down the side of that mountain. That was my first and last time going to that lake.

That's not true. The guy coming down has the right of way. Besides, it's hard to back a RWD vehicle up a hill if the road surface isn't good. Backing down a hill is easy, just use your brakes and take it slow.

I remember one trip I took up this really muddy road at 12,000 feet or so, with a sheer dropoff to our left. I was standing on the rear bumper of a Suburban with a friend, to put as much weight on the rear tires as possible, and I could still feel the back end sliding back and forth across the road. Kind of scary, I was getting ready to jump clear if the car went over the side.

You should see the roads in Dharamsala in India. They look practically the same.

Exactly! I've been Chintpurni and other parts of Himachel Pradesh and went to Dalhousie as a kid. LOL those roads are nerve racking and really scare you because they are so narrow and trucks and buses pass through. I can't imagine how scary this one in Bolivia is since I've never been on it, but it surely must make a lot of people nauseous.

I remember people vomiting in the buses in India when they go into the mountains - good times. Well, the vomiting part no, but still, the sheer excitment and the scare factor is totally out of this world. I have not really been into the mountains at night, but just imagine it. It is basically totally dark out there besides your headlights and you have very sharp turns on narrow roads. LOL just thinking about it is a bit scary. I want to go on a mountain road again, however. It is like no other experience.

You watched the history channel last night didn't you? I saw part of some show that was on about this.

Yea, I saw some of it as well. Pretty crazy.

I saw it as well.

It's been a few times lately but I've never been able to see it from beginning to end. I think in the beginning they say something about there being a newer / safer road but it takes longer so alot of people still take the death road.
