Cream soda is quite delicious actually. It doesn't have any milk products in it if that's what you're afraid of. It's simply vanilla soda. I really encourage you to give it a try. There's not a lot of people that don't like it.

It's the opposite of refreshing. After you've had one you feel that you need a different drink to wash the sweetness away.
I think it's that there's nothing to balance the sugar. It just tastes of thick, overpowering sweetness.

I have family from Worcester, MA - every time they came to visit they would bring several cases of Moxie. So I grew up drinking it: It's changed at least twice that I remember. Each time, sweeter and less potent.

Damn that sucks. The old strong flavor had a curious charm to it.

I agree - the newer ones don't taste as good to me. Though clearly Moxie is/was an acquired taste.

Surprised to see people here say Mug and A&W, those have always seemed the lamest varieties to me. Maybe what they serve at an actual A&W drive up is different?

My favorite cream soda is Virgil's, although I tend to lay off the sweet things for awhile after having one.

Love ginger so I'm always looking for a new ginger beer or ale to try. Really like Reed's Extra Ginger Brew, lots of kick but without the caustic edge that gingers beers from the Caribbean have.

There's mushroom in Boylan's rootbeer??

And as for Moxie, well that stuff is just wrong! It's an institution in Maine for some reason, never understood why. Moxie strikes me as the soda equivalent of Vegemite. Pretty much useless short of dares or shock value IMO. I met a guy once who was very proud of his use of it in his own BBQ sauce. Talked all kinds of shit about how much better it was than 99% of everything he'd ever tried for BBQing. Told him after trying it I was off to find some dog shit in order to get the taste out of my mouth. The boasting dried up pretty quick after that. I later heard he got in yelling matches with some of his customers because some had requested smoked meats with no sauce, not even on the side. Heh.

The A&W they serve fresh is a lot different. It's not as carbonated and has a stronger, smoother flavor.

mug is shit. Store bought A&W is one step above that. The A&W drive-in serves better stuff.

At a minimum I only drink Barq's and even that is hard to find.

Dads is good, when I can find it. IBC is nice too.

For some reason, the A&W that you get from the actual A&W restaurants is pretty good, much better than the canned variety.

Try to find some Fentiman's Ginger Beer. I first found that overseas and after I came back my local Friar Tuck started stocking it. Good stuff with a nice bite to it.

Mug is very good. Barq's and Dad's are at the bottom. IBC is decent.

I like Barq's, but it used to be local, so it's popular around here. I remember it being better as a kid, but that was before Coke bought it.

I found a bottle of Virgil's Special Edition Bavarian Nutmeg at some coop or whatever for $5. I had to try it and it was wonderful.

Ah that's great - the special edition is even more spiced and very hard to find, when I've looked for it.

I wonder if they changed it? I only had it after Coke.

I loved mug before Pepsi bought it, not sure if they changed it.

I can't stand the taste of root beer or Dr. Pepper. They taste like chemicals.

Same goes for Canada Dry Ginger Ale. Tastes like chemicals. Yet if I make my own ginger ale with real ginger, it tastes great.

You haven't had the right root beers. I agree with the comment about Barq's, it has some of that 'chemical' tate.

Recently found some butterscotch root beer. Not recommended, though, tastes like it sounds.

But, I reemembered one of the really good places for soda - PJ's Brewhouse, house made Root beet, cream soda, and the best cherry soda around.

I would say each of those ranks with the best of each type.

Not sure how many states they're in.

the butterscotch root beer i've had was not bad. it's an interesting flavor, but i wouldn't drink it regularly cuz it's more like a dessert than a drink.

Creamy red birch beer: Rather good. Would buy again.

Black cherry: It tastes like they left about a half inch of branch in place for every cherry, but there's sufficient sugar and cherry flavoring in it to overpower the initial "earthy" taste.
(Which is not to say that any real cherries were ever used in the making of this...)

Orange: I prefer the mass-produced stuff. The taste is unmistakably "orange soda," but the smell was immediately reminiscent of the adhesive paste we were given back in elementary school.

Root beer: Maybe it's the yucca extract. Not a fan.

I didn't see their cola at this store. Darn. :\

The only other flavors at this store are creme (commence profuse vomiting) and ginger ale (bleh).

I'd love to try their original birch beer, but that's not available. The store does have Pennsylvania Dutch Birch Beer. I got that stuff a lot when I was younger - it was readily available, since I was in Dutch Country. :) (Or this, as an alternative.)
The store here wanted $6 for a 4-pack of 12oz bottles.

Ya, it wasn't spit it out bad at all - just 'ok, I had that, no need to have it again'.

It wasn't enjoyable.

I don't think it can be fresh made daily, since root beers have to sit awhile. Or at least that was the way it worked when my Dad bought some concentrate and made some home batches back in the 60's.
