First, Root beer is the best soda.

I have a collection for a taste test someday of dozens.

Second, I'll just post a few good sodas.

For root beer: it really is hard to top fresh made A&W. But several small brads are great - Hank's was mentioned, many are pretty similar. Not many stand out, just good.

One that's more unusual and worth trying is Virgil's. It uses strong flavors like vanilla and nutmeg - but perhaps to excess.

My favorite grape is Stewart's.

My favorite Orange Cream - and perhaps tied for best soda at all - is Henry Weinhart's (chilled of course, not good warm).

My favorite black cherry soda is Virgil's - outstanding.

My favorite Cherry sodas - Jones (unavailable for years) and Stewart's.

Other flavors don't interest me as much. Like cola, or even cherry cola. Enjoy.

Forgot to add Cream soda. I really want to like it more - and it's the closest to root beer.

But I am just not that crazy about it. Virgil's, Dr. Brown's, A&W, Jones and many more - it's just an 'ok' flavor. Like Ginger Ale.

Henry Weinhardts root Beer is also pretty damn good.

Honey, and vanilla to round it out.

I found a bottle of Virgil's Special Edition Bavarian Nutmeg at some coop or whatever for $5. I had to try it and it was wonderful.

I really thought I would like it, but I had to empty the bottle on the ground. Spicy ginger ale on the other hand...

They stock that stuff at one of our local upscale grocers. I'll have to try it out.

I like root beer. IDK that I've ever had any made with sassafras, though I remember sampling the root, smelled just like it anyway. So what do they use instead now? Just some chemical flavoring?

As a kid, I always loved A&W, and IBC especially, though that was probably just because it was in glass bottles. Now my preference is for aluminum cans for some reason, somehow beverages adult & root taste better out of cans than bottles to me. IDK.

The last root beer I had was HEB house brand. I remember it being good enough to buy more, & not want A&w.

The only one I do NOT like is Barq's. Generally I like "bite" in carbonated beverages, but I would submit barq's has something more than bite too. Something bad tasting. I know it's one of the few root beers that has caffeine, but that can't be it- if anything I prefer normal coke to caffeine free, assuming that's not all in my head. Can you taste caffeine?

I can't stand the taste of root beer or Dr. Pepper. They taste like chemicals.

Same goes for Canada Dry Ginger Ale. Tastes like chemicals. Yet if I make my own ginger ale with real ginger, it tastes great.

You are one strange dude.

I believe root beer (with sassafras and alcohol) was originally invented as a herbal cough medicine. He may still be weird; but thought I would add that little piece of info. :)

I'll just stick to A&W, Mug, or Barq's.

Fuckin' yuppies and their pretentious crap.

coke was also intended to be medicinal. doesn't matter cuz root beer is awesome and you have to be like a terrorist to not like it.

yeah, I think that's how 99% of Europeans react when they taste root beer.
I remember me and 5 other guys watching superbowl one year and trying to make the evening as american as possible... american beer, root beer, pulled pork, nachos and all that. None of us had ever tasted root beer before and all opened our bottle, tasted it simultaneously and in one great synchronized act of disgust made this face:

the next year it was european beer and no root beer!
