How many times do people ask what the member statuses mean? There IS a help button. Let's just keep this thread up at the top for awhile and maybe it will make people read the MANUAL!

Read!

1) what does RTFM mean?

2) by posting sh!t about the people who ask, you're just as annoying as the people are themselves.

Just answer their question with something like "search for it" instead of ripping them appart. Maybe they're all of 12 like Joshpokeball or maybe they're name's Paulson or something. Just give them a break.

I only "post sh!t about people who ask" because someone posts the same question at least once a day, sometimes more.

"You can give a man fire and he'll be warm for a day; you can teach a man how to use fire and he'll be warm for the rest of his life" ... or something. ;)

right. teach them to use the search tool. Don't teach them that one has to be mean, cruel, stoopid to others, and a complete asshole to get his questions answered.

LOL, Red :)

No offense, but I think you have to take what I say with a grain of salt. A lot of the people who have been here for a long time get all old and wrinkly and start to not like the young'ns anymore.

maybe so, but that's your fault. You've got to be the leader that people may look up to you as being. You've got to show that you're not just as immature as the rest of (us? ;) ). Don't discourage new people into continuing their delve into the wonderful world of the Anandtech Forums. Scaring them away ain't the way to go.

<<You've got to be the leader that people may look up to you as being>>
That's scary...if I wanted to be a role model I would become a rapper or something.

<<You've got to show that you're not just as immature as the rest of [us]>>
But that's the thing...just because I have "Elite" under my name doesn't mean I'm any more (or less :p) mature than anyone else. Well, more than Paulson at least. (Just kidding, P-Dog ;))

<<Don't discourage new people into continuing their delve into the wonderful world of the Anandtech Forums. Scaring them away ain't the way to go.>>
Don't you think it'd be a little unfair to treat them all nice when they're new, and then when they get to be seasoned (AKA addicted) show our real colors? That'd be trickery.

What you are trying to say is it Okay for older members to be rude & stupid???

I can still remember when you were a green nef konichiwa, but we ignore your pathetic comments instead of insulting you :|

the mantle of respect leadership doesn't settle one people who want to be leaders. Leaders are born. If people look up to you as a leader, you have two choices: fill the position, or run away like a coward. Newbies look up to everyone. *keep that in mind*

Elite doesn't mean you're a damn newbie, though. You didn't get to be Elite by being a total dumbfvck, so why be one to new people??

I'm not saying "be fake". Be real. But, if you are the kind of person who is angry all the time, aggressive for no reason, mean and nasty to people you don't even know, I'd say you need help.

No, not that it's okay, but that it's going to happen anyway. (Just ask Red ;))

Oh no, I got my fair share of insults, thank you.

Fine, well maybe I am just a mean old bag who likes to prey on the little ones. *Lock your doors!*

Oh come on, give konichiwa a break here! He is Elite, and he is with good reason, clearly he's a good member, and I think you guys should treat him with a little more respect. He wasn't bashing all new people, he's just ticked off at how stupid some of them can be. ;)

The help button IS there, but somehow I sense that not too many people make use of it.

I'd also like to know what RTFM means. I'll take a guess at it, does it mean "Read the f*cking manual"?

consider something:

someone's so enthousiastic about signing up and getting their first posts that they don't bother with anything else. Both that and being dense are simple mistakes (the latter being from the parents choosing to live next door to Chernoble). I don't see why he/she had to come down so hard on a junior member. With <20 posts, do you expect someone to know their way around and know the netiquite that comes along with the forums too?! :Q

Well all I know is when I joined here, I read the rules and the posting levels. So I never asked those questions. And I don't understand jumping on konichiwa for making a post about this, when in every one of those threads there is somebody bitching about the same thing to the newbies.

so they don't waste their time thinking that this place is all honey and roses only to find out later that it's not?

Red Dawn, but isn't that what your here for? ;) I agree though, this place can be pretty rough. The first thing anybody ever said to me was "You better enable your profile, unless you want everyone to think your a troll".

Who cares if once a day someone ask something that you may not find a good or worthwhile question, or make a post you don't agree with. As an OLDER or MORE RESPECTED member of the board it is your responsibility to show fairness and make the new members feel welcome. Have you ever wondered why there are so many members but so few logged in at all times? Maybe they got fed up with the way they were treated early on and packed up and left for some other place.
You who were given elite status, and those that have been here for a while need to realize this is a community, and not try to act like its a jail system with social levels. Maybe some of the new members are not as astute as you guys/gals, and don't know how to use all the functions of this forum.
It doesn't mean you and others like you need to insult them, call them names, and quickly crush them.
Give them a chance. That person that you might be chasing away could be an influential elite someday, or could become a mod, and hold a grudge.

Treat others the way you'd like to see this community prosper, and it will.
Otherwise, all you are going to get is crap, and if you like crap, I guess that's good, but I hope for more out of the membership.

I know I really don't matter as compared to some of you big guns, but at least i care enough to try to make things better. So get off your imaginary high horse, and come join the party.

What party?

Ok, I agree with Red. Sometimes it just gets annoying to hear the saaaaame questions over and over and over. I'll tone down the subject. :)
