Dennil learned something today. While waiting for my prescriptions to get filled at the corner pharmacy, a dude came and drank a little bottle the pharmacist gave him, then signed his name on a sheet of paper. Same thing for another a few minutes later, then a woman. When my stuff was ready, I looked on the paper and it said daily methadone dose. For some reason, I always thought that stuff would be injected, like the heroin it replaces.

why would they prescribe it as a pain medication? i thought it was used to ween people off heroin?

It's effective against chronic and/or severe pain that is difficult to control.

Methadone is also a horribly overprescribed and inappropriate pain medication and comes in a pill form as well.

Fixed that for you.

fixed it? Thats exacty what I said 😕

wat?

Methadone caries a signifcant stigma because of its use to wean addicts off of opiates. Some people equate that to any dose being inaapropriate.

I'm actually involved with pain control on a daily basis, methadone is an unnecessary drug, and IMHO, shouldn't be prescribed outside of terminal cancer pain.

I see people screwed up for life frequently because of inappropriately prescribed methadone. They're typically the patients the physicians have just given up on, and give them the methadone just to get them the hell off their exam table & out of the office.

The use of methadone as a replacement for heroin is ridiculous, I'd really rather just see them give out flipping heroin.

I was prescribed Hydromorphone for Pancreatitis. Similar to Methadone in that it is an opiate. I had 2mg pills. Wasn't very strong though. 🙁

I've seen a few sides of that coin myself. My BIL passed away from a methadone overdose, it was a contributing factor in the death of my SIL as well (neither were prescribed methadone)

My nephew, who recently passed away from complictions arising from Williams-Campbell Syndrome used it to control pain when nothing else would touch it.

My father spent the last couple months weaning off of Methadone in preparing for another neck surgery. He also used it for chronic pain control.

In the cases of my nephew and father, it brought relief when other methods failed allowing them to live more normal lifestyles. In the cases of my BIL and SIL it was the devil....

responsible patients receiving methadone for legitimate pain receive 30 day supplies. those three people you saw receiving a daily dose is indicated for being an irresponsible, addicted, opiate junkie.

Man, that sucks...nothing is worse than pain.

LOL. Nah. That would just be silly.

I'd imagine that they require you to drink it at the pharmacy...
