You know you are old

When you start realizing you are half way to death when you start watching movies you used to love, then you think about when you watched them were some of the best days of your life (college for me). Then you realize that was 20 years ago.

So, I just started watching Swingers. Which I saw once in college with a friend who introduced it to me (probably via VHS rental at an actual rental store, remember those?)

Sum'bich

all play no work + copius amounts of eye candy, what's NOT to love?

In college I worked my ass off networking and doing extra curriculars. You had to do that back in 2009 if you wanted a shot at ANY job because of how terrible the job market was. On top of that I was always broke as hell because I didn't have time to both work and school.

That movie summarizes my experience in LA in the 90s. I lived on beechwood drive where that diner was. I remember going to the LAVA lounge and seeing Heather Graham sitting at the bar having a drink and laughing at the similarity.

I did enough cool shit in my 20s and 30s that I am pretty comfortable living in the midwest being a soccer dad.

I'm sorry if college was the best part of your life. It should be the beginning, not the end.

HA! Funniest thing I read all day. No, once you have to pay bills your life takes a notch down. I had a GREAT time post college but it was fun without repsonsiblities vs fun with responsibilities. Post college though, the $2K mountain bike was awesome. Some want a nice car. I got a sick mountain bike.

Or get an engineering degree and do coops/internships. It's a simple path. But having walked it, it is more obvious now.

Seriously though, use your colleges DCD (Career Development Center). It's more valuable than the degree.

The time between WWII and the year I was born was less than the time I graduated high school and now :^/

Kids change things. I have a 10 year old that loves basketball and soccer. He told me he wants to get good at b-ball though (idolizes dad I guess) and do soccer since his friends do it. He's 10. I think I can turn him into a serious balller if he sticks to it.

I wish that i did a big city in my 20s. I'm in "the country" but not really. I grew up in the country and damned, in hindsight what a way to grow up. No fake ass bullshit. But I never did the NYC type life. And I never will be able to. Even if I win the lottery, it is something to do in the 20s, not 60s.

Ouch.

WWII => '39 to '45. So you are atelast 75/2? Atleast 37 or so? Must be a history fan because I don't personally anchor my life based on history. More on popular media.

But man, I keep wondering if I will go buy a Mustang or sum'n stupid at age 40. I think my midlife crisis hit at 37 because i was really looking at RWD muscle cars at that time.

It's funny that you mention that. I just bought Toy Story on Amazon on my Roku and it said "1995". TWENTY YEARS AGO PEOPLE!!!

looking at things through the lens of history is interesting. comparing how things were to how they now are really drives home how short "recent" history and life is.

My father knew a civil war vet when he was growing up. It wouldn't be implausible for that vet to have known a revolutionary war vet when he was growing up. That puts me three people away from the revolutionary war. Not so far really, but things sure have changed since then.

Wow, I didn't realize the time overlap was so short! I love talking to my grandma (born in the 20's) about all of the stuff she's seen in her life. The crazy thing is that she's in her 90's and uses a Windows computer & does email and prints color pictures of the grandkids at home (we upgraded her to a 32" 720p LCD TV a couple years ago for increased font size), has a Roomba, and uses Netflix. I mean, the first talkie movie was released in 1927 and she grew up using typewriters. Not to mention all of the pioneering in cars, airplanes, spacehships, plus medical procedures, food distribution, etc.

When I was young my immigrant grandmother told about darning socks for the German soldiers in northern Italy during World War I.

I have one uncle who is still living. He and a cousin of my father's are the only remaining survivors of that generation within my family. The rest have mostly passed away within the last ten years, three of them just last year.

Something about the previous generation all leaving this world that hammers home the message: You're next.

what's sad is the special effects in jurassic park (which is over 20 years old) look to be better than the effects in jurassic world coming out this year.

The great movie "Repo Man" is 31 years old, from the year when cell phones first came on the market, 5 years before the advent of the world wide web, the year the first Apple MacIntosh came on the market.

College was fun, but would not want to go back. It's nice to finally be established in life with a house and job and being able to buy the things I like instead of working on getting started on life. I feel old when I start to consider how long ago it was though. Already been working for 7-8 years now. Heck even high school was quite a memorable time, it's crazy to think how far that is. I felt like an adult then, I see high school kids now and they're really that, just kids. I feel so old. I'll be 30 in a bit more than a year from now. Where did time go?

Speaking of school, had the weirdest dream last night. I dreamed that I was back in school. Don't know why I dream that every now and then. So it was near the end of class and we were mostly all standing, closing up our binders and stuff and getting ready to head out. Then Bob Barker walked into class. So we all shook his hand and stuff, and talked and it was pretty cool to get to meet him and what not. I was trying to come up with a witty moment to say "come on down!" and it never happened, but also wanted to tell him how I thought all the stuff he does for greenpeace is great but it was kinda a blur from there and next thing you know I'm out of class looking for my locker. Then I realized I was at the wrong set of lockers so I went further down the hall. I don't really remember the rest.

Weirdest thing ever, and no idea what Bob Barker was doing in that dream. lol

Maybe it's a sign I need to go play The Price is Right and I'm going to win. 😛
