You know what sucks? Having friends that are "poor"

Curious, was a $15 trip to the movie going to turn into a $90 trip to the bar, followed by a $50 trip to the afterhours joint?

$15 for a movie? Fuck that...wait 6 months, rent it at the Redbox for $1.20...or $1.50 for the Blu-Ray version.

Ask about 5 good friends if they want to go see the Avengers movie this weekend. Out of those who have replied, they go "I don't have the money." It's freaking $15. You're 24+ and not in college with a job. How the F are you so bad with money you can't go, "ok yeah lets go!"

:colbert:

Sounds like a rough life you live.

Some people have this thing called a budget, where you set aside a certain amount of money for specific things, like groceries and entertainment.

If I didn't have enough left in my alloted fund for the movie, I would simply say it's too expensive or I don't have the money, and then I wouldn't go.

FYI - you can make a lot of money and still be poor, especially with Student Loans.

None of them have student loans (the ones who are "poor" anyways, the ones with loans like myself are not... and no we aren't in jobs using our degrees either). I know they make roughly the same I do, although not quite. They live at home.

Oh and I know they don't have a budget they adhere to.

Nope. Don't think any of us really care for strip clubs seeing them as a waste of $. At most we might go play pool after at a nearby pool hall where I would be covering the table and maybe one or two of their drinks. So, they could most likely get the movie a drink at the pool hall after for $15 and 4-5 hours hanging out with people they (claim to) like doing things they (claim to) like.

I also do no understand this conditioned mentality of having to have a drink and snack during a movie. Can people really not go two hours without a drink and snack?

Seriously, the only drink I have at a movie is whatever liquor I brought in my flask. 😛

lol at it's a conditioned response to have a nice drink and snack at the end of a long day while doing a LEISURE activity.

These are basic needs. When you lack them you turn and try to fight against this.

I always go to $5 Saturday or Sunday morning matinees. The price at the nearby theater goes up to $7.50 after noon.

For $10 total (we never buy concessions) it's a fun, cheap thing to do. Especially for throwaway movies like the Avengers.

$15 is ridiculous to view a movie, and if your friends cannot go see it because of that, well... you should hire them to overlook your finances, because apparently they have a better grasp on finances.

But wait. They are too poor? I know extremely poor people who could gather $15. Maybe they are too frugal? Is that what you meant?

Please. Go rent a season of Friends and commiserate with them to make yourself feel better.

I agree. Movies are frikken expensive. But not quite as expensive as going to a $32 a plate Japanese buffet after a video-game tournament, when you only have $35 for the entire rest of the week, because your buds are all going, because the winner of the tourney is going, because he's flush with cash. (At least he spotted me some bucks so I could eat.)

LOL I'm 'poor' and I bought 3D tix to the midnight premiere for five friends :hmm: Half of everyone from work was also there, it was well worth it. "I am a GOD!"

^^^

I don't go to movies. I've been less than 5 times in 20 years, and not all of those times were completely voluntary. My threshold for 'too much money' is far below $15 as far as movies are concerned.

This.

Currently in college and most of my friends have seen the Avengers already. I flat out refuse to stand in line to pay 15 bucks to sit in a room and listen to strangers eat while we watch a movie. Only time I like to go to theaters is a few weeks into a movie's run in the middle of the day. Slightly cheaper (still outrageous) prices and less people.

Wait til you get older
You: Hey, want to take a week cruise to the Bahamas? It's only $5k
Friend: Nah, I have no money
You: Man, having poor friends sucks.

i have a group of friends that live paycheck to paycheck and a group of friends (mostly coworkers) where we fight over who gets the tab at the end of the night.

then there are the couples that come out like once every 6 months.

I'm sure these people will more than likely not consider you to be a "friend".

Your hate for them surely shows.

The majority of Americans that are lucky enough to still have a job (other than you obviously) have been seeing their wages drop and cost of living increase.

Many or most living check to check barely making ends meet or actually running in a hole like the country.

So when they say they don't have the money to spend on a movie they are being fiscally responsible, truthful and should be respected and actually applauded for turning your condescending ass down to spend frivolously at the movies.

shit dude, why not get a better job

I too would rather spend that money on the DVD and avoid the generally lousy theater experience. (As cited by others: Loud people, lousy seats, public restrooms, and no pause/rewind capability. And frankly, the lousy framerate at which movies are filmed, 23.976fps, is really apparent on a huge screen.)

Holy cow! Admission went up 20%! I was thinking about seeing a double-header tonight - John Carter, then the Avengers. $6 to get in to see both. That's like $3 each! And with my wife with me, we'll be spending $12 just to get in!

And, they don't throw a fit when you try to bring in food. Though, they have large pizzas for $6 or $7, the best french fries in the area, enough popcorn to feed an army for a couple bucks, etc. So, "date" night will cost about $25.

Drive in is where it's at for sure. We have the same double feature at our local one. The other screen isn't too shabby either, American Reunion and 21 Jump Street. The pricing is much better, food is superior, and we've got some nice chairs to sit in. The only thing you really miss out on is the theatrical level sound but I've gotten to where I just don't care.

At least that link was honest about drive-in's...they already had flies floating around your cursor.

The hillbillies also need to fix that they don't allow any LEGAL beverages on site to ILLEGAL beverages...however, even then that is ambiguous. Beer is legal.
