I am sorry if it's been discussed before, but you know those high school graduates that can't read? I think I'll be a college equivalent when I graduate. I come out of pretty much all my classes not knowing a lot of the material covered, yet I still pass usually with a B or higher. I mean, I am not saying it sucks cause I myself am not learning, but the fact that they still pass people that don't know the stuff! They are usually based on previouis years stats, ie 26% get Bs, etc. That's not good...what do you guys think? =)

Pennstate huh? Well, I doubt it matters, I am guessing most schools (if not all) pass a certain percentage, even if the whole class fails.

That depends on your attitude and out of the classroom efforts. I went through your typical middle class public education and I feel that I got a decent education out of it.

Like I was trying to say, it sucks because they pass some many "not so qualified" students, I do admit a lot of people do get a lot out of the schools, but there are at least an equal amount that don't get anything out of it (except a diploma).

You don't think they do the same in private/religious schools? Or could it be that American kids are just lazy? (myself included)

I think it's more about the specific teacher, than the system.

But, that's what parents are for... To make sure the kid gets a good education, above and beyond what the school does. As a parent, I can say that. ;)

besides, its not really fair to compare american high school students test scores agains japanese and other countriest test scores, because in japan, you are screen tested before high school, and only the smartest kids even get to go, the rest go to trade school and vocational school.

in the US, everyone goes, not just the intellectual elite. I feel if you take the highest class american students they would rate well against the world

Actually a higher percentage of Japanese kidsattend & finish high school than American kids, & that's out of a total of all kids, including those who don't even go to school.

Yes, but you guys still aren't seeing what I was trying to say. I am complaining that American's pass even morons that don't know anything, as long as the stats work out. Isn't that kinda wrong?

A HS diploma doesn't mean anything in the job world anyway. They only effect it has is if you don't have one (usually means you are very very stupid or lazy).

I think we should have HS entrance exams. That way, if you don't cut it, you don't get into school. This seems kind of heartless, but if you are not school material, you do not belong in school.

People whine that such a system is unfair, but life is not fair. I have no artistic talent (I mean NONE). Do I whine that I am discreminated against? No, I just chose a different path. Americans are too caught up in thining everything should be fair. Sometimes you just get screwed, that is a fact.

Our k-12 education sucks. Our higher education system is probably the best in the world.

Rahvin - I agree. A friend of mine was so uninspired by the educational system he dropped out. When he got his life together and went back to get his GED, shortly after, he landed an IT job making $40K a year. Turns out, he loved working with computers and coding. Something the local high school didn't even offer as far as ciriculum was concerned. He was so interested in technology, that he started reading about it and learning all that he could on his own. He's now doing better than most of his friends who stuck with the system.

If you look at most of the CEO's in this country you'll find they are college drop-outs who had their own inspirations and ran with them towards success.

I don't feel the educational system should be responsible for student's intelligence or sucess(which is why I think Bush's testing scheme is complete crap). Rather, intelligence will come forth if the student is interested in the material and chooses to apply themselves. Students need to develop an appreciation for learning and that has to come in and of themselves. It can't be forced upon a student of they'll be uninspired and depressed. Plus they won't really be learning, they'll probably be just memorizing to pass tests then forgetting everything as soon as grades come out.

Diploma, degree, it's all the same if the colleges just pass a certain percentage of the class no matter how well (or badly) they did.

Personally I think alot of the failures are due to kids not trying enough. I do realize that some kids do have a lot going against them like bad homelife or bad parents, but I think a lot of it has to do with kids lack of trying. I'm 19 and just graduated high school 2 years ago. I can tell you from first hand experience that the majority of slackers bragged about not going to class and not because of bad teachers!

I think parents need to take more responsibily in their kids lives and futures.

Blame the parents. Anymore, if a teacher tries to hold a student back the parents of the child throw a stink, say the teacher is calling their kid ignorant and threaten to sue/pull their student out of the school/ect.

It's usually the same parents that really could give a flying fart about what their kid actually does in school, as long as their kid isn't labled as "stupid".

There's a lot more problems than that..but that's a whole 'nother thread.

All I have to say is yeah the system sucks, but how do you think it got there? In recent years (from 80's to present) there has been a total demand for equal treatment across the board. Now look back on the educational system in the 40's-60's (I would say 70's but ehhh I don't really wanna go there:)) you will notice our educational system at that time was much better.

And the reason was becuase it was not all equal, not everyone got to go to school. Hell not everyone had to go to school. Now I'm not saying it was a picturesque educational system in the past, but as society and its needs change more pressure is put on schools. The educational system fills up many voids in scoiety and trys to fullfill many expectations put on it today. Yet when budget cuts come around why is education usually one of the first to be cut?

Look at it, the school systems today are forced to teach in multiple languages, teach about multiple cultures, provide many programs (ie:headstart programs), it has to do more things but I just woke up so I can't really think right now, where in the past the system simply had to go in and teach.

provide many programs (ie:headstart programs)

Headstart has been one of the few indisputablely EFFECTIVE government programs. Be careful of what examples you use. Do you even know What Headstart IS????
