You know it's bad when school systems start laying off teachers :(

No Lifer
My fiance called me this morning all upset. The principal called in recently hired teachers (about 11-12 total) and told them that after the school year is finished, they won't have a job. Luckily, my fiance was hired in fall 2007, so she wasn't affected.

However, they've lost a kindergarten teacher, a second grade teacher, a third grade teacher, media center teacher, ESL (English as second language) and numerous other positions. All of these teachers were hired during this school year or over the summer, but now they're screwed.

To make matter worse, the school system is on a hiring freeze, so they can't find work within the school system, so they'll have to move out of the county or elsewhere where other school systems are also having cutbacks.

I've been pretty much oblivious to the whole downturn in the economy, but this is making it more real to me 🙁

montessori schools would love to hire real teachers...

and maybe the class size didnt support the amount of teachers they hired, causing the school to merge classes. there could be any number of reasons for this.

teachers are always high in demand. though, i am referring to the ones wearing leather, mask, and a whip.

Its so bad here in FL they are looking for volunteer subs:

Wednesday, February 18, 2009
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------

DELAND (Central Florida News 13) -- Volusia County Schools is recruiting volunteers who are interested in serving as substitute teachers.

The district has frozen the hiring of substitute teachers, citing budget cuts as the reason for the volunteer substitutes.

If you are interested, here are the things you have to do before you can teach:

Have a high school diploma
Fill out an application
Get your fingerprints taken
Submit to a background check
Take a drug test
Get a day of training
You will also have to pay to get security clearance and pay for your drug test. The fingerprinting, background check and drug test will cost $94.95.

The work day is 7.5 hours at middle or high schools and 7 hours at an elementary school. Nine elementary schools are in session for one additional hour.

Sad. It's pretty bad that we can't even afford to pay people to teach our kids.

We can afford it. We just have Congressmen/women who spend the money on stuff that gets them re-elected instead.

The politicians, even down to town level, choose what sections of their budgets to cut, and they love cutting educational funding, and then asking the people for tax overrides. For the children!

there is like 60 billion in the stimulus dedicated to education. Another 140 billion in state aid of which some may trickle down to education.

good, most teachers are worthless, especially the crap they "teach" in elementary school.

WTF?

NO! not WTF, absolutely 100% truth!!!

I can think back to several teachers I had that shouldn't have been allowed in the same room with kids, and MOST of them were elementary school teachers.

Elementary school teachers are mostly liberal indoctrinators these days. Everything has to be fair. LOL sick!

My wife is an elementary school teacher and neither her nor any of her colleagues fit your description. Also, what's the problem with being fair? Treating everyone equally sure does sound like a horrible idea. I know that isn't what you meant, but that's what fair really means. You don't have to tip-toe around the sensitive little disaster children but being fair is perfectly fine.

Who would pay to volunteer to babysit a bunch of little bastard kids?

you hit it right on the head. Since you had 3 bad teachers, we need to fire all of them in order to make sure the kids are learning good.

I never understood why school district don't first fire high school janitors and put students to work. In Europe, students clean classroom them self. Why can't American students do the same thing.
