I'm not trolling. Just because you don't like my opinion, I know it, and post it anyway doesn't make me a troll.
I mentored for years in college at elementary schools. By and large teachers teach children what to think rather than how to think critically. Most of them don't have any deeper understanding of science and math, which is completely sad.
What do I mean by fair? I mean the ABSOLUTE EXCLUSION of competition in school. Everyone's a winner! Zero discipline. And frankly yes, weed out the dumbasses and send them to vocational school. There are plenty of tech support and other non-thinking-required jobs available out there despite the fact we became a technological society decades ago. (ZING! that might be a troll, but also, TRUE)
How should we fix this? Remove all the teacher's unions and do not hire anyone from one. Hire the best teachers by promoting competition among them, and pay them well. Base their salary, specialty, and employment on results. Get rid of middle management. School principal is the most worthless position in the world. Have these people report directly to the school board which should be all citizens volunteering their own time.
PROMOTE EDUCATION. Make it fun and desirable to be smart. Kids do not get the idea school is no fun from nowhere; they get it from their moronic parents who don't know where Delaware is, or that X is just a letter.
Over the past 100 years IQs have dropped sharply in this country. The US is behind shit hole third world countries in some areas. With all our money and resources, that's just wrong.
All of them, no way! Thank god I had some good ones, but they were few and far between and that was 30+ years ago. The situation has gone very far down hill since then.

I think the education system should be revamped completely to the japanese or chinese model but lessen the focus on memorization. Finally, getting rid of the unions is not a bad idea as well as decreasing spending on education. Throwing money on the problem won't fix it and there is enough of it already in the system. The minimum for education would be writing utensils and paper which are supplied by parents. The only expensive devices to finance would be the computers and teacher's salaries. Shouldn't be as expensive as it is right now at all.
Finally, from what I saw from my 7+ years in american school system kids aren't motivated at all. I don't get their fascination with being popular at all. Our society would be a lot farther ahead today if we focused on the education of the country instead of the current week's American idol. However, most of this is wishful thinking. Everybody has theories about fixing the education system just like everyone magically receives an MD whenever someone asks a health question whether it be a forum or in real life.
This would hold true if just about everything but writing utensils and teacher salaries were free. I suppose transportation, electricity, gas (heat), staff, taxes, maintenance, supplies, insurance, oh the hell with it, you're a moron.Originally posted by: artikk

I know I already made this point above, but seriously: What's up with people in this thread talking about education who can't string a fucking sentence together without committing numerous BASIC grammatical errors?

Maybe, just maybe the states should start consolidating the administration side of things. Having a school board that consist of 6 schools is just not feasible.
