A.) Do you know why I pulled you over?
B.) Do you know how fast you were going?

A) You have a miniscule penis and the only way you can feel good about yourself is to carry a gun and exercise the tiny bit of authority you have.

B) No, you changed the outcome by measuring it.

NEVER answer anything except "no" to those questions. If you answer yes it will be taken as an admission of guilt.

ATOT and its absolute statements...*sigh*

Oh, then please share your vast wisdom with us unworthy humans and explain in detail the times when it is better to admit that you know you were committing a crime.

I'm more likely to give someone a warning when they admit they did something wrong and apologize than when they pull the "Are you sure I was speeding? I didn't think I was going that fast. My speedometer says I was doing the speed limit" when I clock them at 20 mph over or "I know I stopped at that stop sign" when I saw them completely blow right through it.

Sometimes honesty gets you farther. I know, shocker.

A. I would guess you are just doing your job.
B. 67000 miles per hour in orbit around the Sun, if we can trust the astrophysicists.

When he pulls you over, run out of the car to the side of the road (if it's out in the country), and pretend to pee quickly. Then get back in your car and wait for him. If he asks why you were going so fast and what you were doing, tell him you think you just got a urinary tract infection and it makes you have to pee really badly every 5-10 minutes. You were trying to make it to the next gas station when he pulled you over.

I am polite and respectful. I get out of the ticket a vast majority of the time.

Whether or not you get out of a ticket depends mostly on the severity of the infraction, your driving record (which on the police computer includes previous unticketed stops), and the officer's 'quota.' Your politeness and respectfulness factor very little into it (although I recommend that everyone always be as polite and respectful as possible of course).

Politeness and respectfulness (and straightforward honesty) DO factor into this, Vic.

Cops get stupidly lied to and stupidly disrespected all the damn time, and truy appreciate someone who comes at them with neither, and can and do cut you a break based solely on how you respond.

I know. I've been told explicitly so by the officer who pulled me over. I have SEEN a cop's demeanor and approach completely change based on how I responded to him.

I'm not saying all those other factors don't pertain, just that you have no firm basis for saying how you approach the officer is a tiny factor. It isn't.

Fixed.

Yeah, I guess the local cops already know who you are so don't even bother stopping you.

Actually no, I just moved and I don't know many people outside of my department- and I don't live in the town where I work.

That will never get you out of a ticket. You need to approach the situation based on the results you want.

Do you want to possibly get out of the ticket, or do you want to guarantee you will get a ticket, but nothing worse than a ticket.

If you have any cop friends or relatives, ask them for their business card and stick it in your windshield. That alone has gotten my Mom out of a few tickets.

"no" to both.

though i can probably make a decent guess to the real answers :p

maybe i have a shitty foot (i don't use cruise control much) but i can easily be 5mph over and not realize it, just from slight differences in pedal position.

Same here. It factors into it so much; its pretty much all they have to go on. How you act during that initial transaction will generally determine how the rest of it will go.

I've had cops come at me spitting, but as soon as they realize my overall demeanor, it does a complete 180.

If I know I was speeding, I'm going to be honest about it. Being uncooperative will get you an automatic ticket. Being cooperative has gotten me out of several tickets with just verbal or written warnings.

A.) Do you know why I pulled you over?
Best answer: (from the mother of a friend of mine) "Don't tell me, let me guess.....you want me to buy a ticket to the policeman's ball??" To which the policeman in question responded (I kid you not!!), "No, ma'am......policemen don't have balls"!!! My friend told me her mother just sat there, looking at the cop, completely straight faced......and after a couple seconds to digest what had just come out of his mouth, he handed her back her driver's license and insurance card, told her to have a nice day, walked back to his patrol car and drove off without ticketing her!! She also said her mom decided in a moment's notice that the best thing was to keep a straight face, since she figured cracking up would only ensure she got the ticket.

B.) Do you know how fast you were going?
Best answer: (from me, after getting pulled over by the CHP, years ago) "I believe the real question is......do YOU know how fast I was going???"
That was after he'd lost sight of me after clocking me at 70mph in a 55 zone, going over the San Rafael Bridge (SF Bay area). In reality, I figure I was going well over 100 at one point, but had taken my foot off the accelerator, and was just coasting down in speed at that point. Oh yeah, I made certain to pull over AFTER the exit to San Quentin prison, not before!! ;)

What you friend failed to mention to you was that after your mom made that joke, she went down on the officer.

Please re-read my post again. You should know better IMO than to pull this kind of thing.

Being impolite and disrespectful will get you a ticket every time, but being polite and respectful will NOT get out you of a ticket in most cases, and Oldsmoboat was trying to say that it would.
If the infraction is relatively severe (like 20 or more over), if you have a bad driving record (or even just a history of multiple stops), or if the officer is under quota (and yes, they do exist), then it would extremely unlikely that you will be able to talk your way out of a ticket. And some police depts, especially state patrol, have a 'ticket every stop' policy, so it's not up to the officer's discretion at all.

IOW, always be polite and respectful to the police. They deserve it. But don't fool yourself into believing that just by being polite and respectful (and more importantly, openly confessing) will allow you to get out of the consequences of breaking the law.

I generally just say "What seems to be the problem officer?" before they ask me any questions, generally that preempts them asking me how fast I thought I was going and similar. After that just be cooperative and polite and you'll be fine.

I've been pulled over and charged with speeding in ZERO visibility. I've never seen such dense fog in my life. I was driving so slowly that, even from only a few feet away, I could only tell that the police car wasn't a reflective road sign by the color (road signs never have blue). Needless to say, I was practically inching down the road and past the police car. When he said I was speeding, I asserted myself strong and hard with a "HA!," dismissing it as an obvious problem with the equipment when used in such conditions and making it clear that I was innocent. It was clear that I would not simply tolerate an "attitude" ticket, so he knew that I would be a problem in court. He just said "Nope. It was working fine earlier." and let me go. It was working fine then too... he likely just wanted to see what the light in my car was coming from (my brother using the laptop). I wonder if he thought we were recording anything, like our conversation about how insanely thick the fog was and wondering where the sides of the road were (certainly not speeding).

Excuse me, Vic. Pull WHAT sort of thing? You JUST repeated your own woefully wrong statement, even after several of us have testified otherwise, and the only two cops presently on OT immediately gave my post thumbs up.

In fact, as SEVERAL of us have tried to tell you and two actual cops have seconded, being polite and respectful and honest CAN get you out of the consequences of breaking the law.

It has for me.

It has for Olds.

It has for Eli.

It has for Capt Caveman.

Our two working police officers said, and I quote:
