What's really needed is conceptual understanding. What they don't tell you in school, is that ridiculously long calc problem you just solved, is literally done instantly by a MATLAB code some other employee wrote 12 years ago.

You aren't doing that but you probably are applying things you learned.

In EE you start off with basic resistor circuits, then add caps, then inductors, then go to the s-domain, then add op-amps, then non-linear circuits, etc. By the time you add op-amps you should have an intuitive idea of how an RLC circuit responds in time domain or frequency domain but you really only gain that by deriving the early stuff. Plus how do you trust the program you ran was correct if you don't have a feel for what correct looks like?

Maybe MechE or CivilE are different but in EE even if you aren't doing the hard math you are applying the ideas behind it.

Further, what happens when that 12 year-old Matlab script has a fixed point bug that is only exercised by inputs outside the range available on your product 12 years ago, but are now valid inputs with your current product? Someone will have to dig into it, find the error, and implement a fix - oh yea, that someone is you. Good luck if you don't understand the principles of how to solve the problem in the first place.
