Most Vets and Vet techs are morons as well, no offense to you personally. I had one Vet I used to use and he was a old timer, he was great and knew how to work with dogs. A lot of the newer Vets don't know shit, all they know how to do is hand out drugs. I have met too many Vet techs that just sucked, they had no business dealing with animals, they were there for a paycheck only. Shar Peis can be aggressive, you need to know how to work with them. I have owned several of them, never had an issue.
This is what I'm indirectly getting at. Someone like me who knows his way around animals can deal, but your Average Family gets one, doesn't know how to socialize and train the dog, and then you're back to my Eating Little Timmy's Face story.

Pitbull genetics have regressed horribly over the last 30 years due to the upswing in back yard breeders in the states. There are way too many dogs with shitty temperaments being bred.

Unfortunately, you guys can cry all you want that it's not the breed, it's the owner, but it's bullshit. Owner can help mask the genetic problems that these dogs have, but once they reach sexual maturity, they are loaded guns and should be treated as such.

And just so you don't think I'm some biased anti- Pit Bull fanatic, here is a picture of my 4 month old:

As long as Pitbulls remain popular and cheap, dogs with the wrong temperament will continue to pass their aggressive tendencies on. The breed needs a major clean up.

And that's about it in a nutshell, in the past any pit that showed human aggressive tendency's was put down immediately but backyard breeders of course don't give a crap. That being said I love the hell out of my 6 yr old pit BUT I don't take any chances with her, always on a leash while walked or on a steel cable while in the backyard. She's fixed so that seems to help..

Well this is a problem across the board with backyard breeders. They don't / won't destroy poor quality offspring (due to health and temperment) nor stop breeding pairs that produce them.

Again the focus is simply on pitbulls. My dog has been attacked three times (myself included once with the first): Rottweiller (incident had 'rott/pit mix', this one reported, a whippet, and a golden retriever...the latter two both purebred with the owners insisting the incidents never happened and quickly left the dog park.

There have been a few pitbull incidents. One is a legitimate issue, not a pure bred and mixed with something to produce a dog about 140lbs owned by a 100lb stripper. Came to the park in a spiked collar and would not listen to her.

Ended up maiming a mastiff, turns out the owner and her dog were wanted by authorities in 7 other dog killings/maimings at various parks. Either she doesn't get it to not bring the dog to the park or she enjoys seeing this happen. In all cases she was quick to volunteer her information and tag. They were false each time.

The other few times have more or less been a smaller dog overly aggressive which was probably it sensing it's owner's animosity toward the pitbull.

I have a cattle dog/lab mix...a lot insist it's a pitbull. The cattle dog has bull terrier in them so they have that 'look' people confuse.

Despite him being bit three times bad enough for surgery, burgulars torturing him while he was crated as a 6 month old puppy, and whoever owned him originally wrapping him in a plastic grocery bag and throwing him in a dumpster....he loves other animals and people. Even when roughly handled, he is authoritive, but gentle.

He had some minor food guarding issues when he was 3-4months old, but now will let our cats just eat out of his bowl while he sits and waits for them to finish, one cat and him will eat together...the others growl at him if he tries to eat too 🙂

Yea, I hear 'ya, I've called the cops on two people for that crap, one has a 2 foot fence that their dog easily jumps and runs into the street to confront my dog and my fuckwad neighbor who has already been warned after I called the cops for letting her Shepard run loose. The wost was a lady who let her poodle off the leash in the park near my house not seeing me and my dog because the idiot was reading with a light while walking her poodle. Of course it immediately charged my dog and I wound up on the asphalt tackling my dog to avoid her poodle getting mauled, many scrapes and cuts from this so I ripped her a new one. "I'm full grown, don't talk to me like that" was her reply, yea, a full grown irresponsible moron I told her..

your dog shouldn't be looking to maul a poodle though.

It was dark, the poodle was in full charge directly at my dog, growling. You would be hard pressed to find a pit or any dog for that matter that didn't see this as aggression and respond accordingly. Now if the poodle was just walking in a normal manner, yea, I agree but this one was running full bore at us..

hmmm.... i know poodles will bark and maybe growl, but running full charge at your dog? never saw a poodle that aggressive. most of them are all bark and then scared of their own shadow.
that must've been Super Poodle! 😛

Could you show me an article that states Pit bulls are "one of the most popular breeds" for therapy dogs. I could not find one.

While not one of the most popular breeds they are popular.

http://www.thedogfiles.com/2011/04/...ents-first-ever-pit-bull-therapy-dog-program/

The latter link brings up how they were historically called 'nanny dogs' as they were so good with small children. The pit bull breed as a whole was a huge part of america for a long time. It's the latest 'wannabe a gangsta' mentality that is creating issues.

police are also working with them now.

Poodles can be aggressive, many are nippy. Standard poodles are decent sized as well can can create a terrible bite...however the larger ones are less nippy.

Well if you had to tackle your dog to stop the aggression then it wasn't the poodle being the sole problem or you'd both been mauled.

you can't really compare therapy dogs to other dogs, breeding is much more select and the dogs are socialized and trained by people with an actual education in just that.

I can't really see why cops would use pitbulls, the breed isn't very large or vocal so you lose some fear factor, they maul rather than restrain, there's plenty of breeds with much better smell and sight and they aren't known for their agility or obedience/intelligence.

Alky, you are another pit-bull apologist

police using pit bulls are doing it for show - please stop giving us more pro-pb links please

Do you even read what you link? The very first sentence of the article is "Pit Bulls are Diane Jessup's life Passion" ? Nicely researched.

Why don't you ask the USPCA about their opinion of pit bulls as police dogs - then get back to me.

Also - the link about them being used to watch over children - 'the pit bull breed as a whole was a huge part of America for a long time'

That might be the single most ignorant post I've EVER seen on this forum - aside from anything Nemesis says.

Your post is probably the most ignorant so I will agree.

I don't own a pitbull and I agree that there is an issue.

I never said they 'watched over children', they were known to be good with them. There is a difference.

I only studied zoology for years and years along with working with a large vet practice that also covered a zoo, so what the fuck do I know about animals.

Obviously you just respond to stuff without even reading in on anything.

I couldn't live ignorant, I am sad you see it as a badge of honor. 🙁

once you said this about one of the most feared breeds right now you lost all credibility.

However; it had nothing to do with that as to why the police are using them.

You may want to do some research first.

Here is the first google hit:

pit bulls are feared by reputation not by appearence...

the article you linked didn't mention any redeeming qualities of pitbulls as police dogs, only that a "selfproclaimed pit bull freak" thinks other breeds drools a lot.... and that pit bulls are cheap.

You clearly either don't get out much around dogs and people or are ignorant as well.

I guess the points of being smaller, cleaner, less aggressive during transport, etc were longer words than you learned so far from http://www.hop.com

It's clear you also have an ignorant agenda.

I've had 4 dogs so far, so I've been around dogs a little bit and also my social life is just fine, but if that's the best you can come up with ...

the dog trainer at my local shepherds club's day job is training police dogs and their handlers. On weekends he holds these crash police dog courses for club members and their dogs, quite good fun actually, think of them as obedience+ classes with tracking and taking down "perps".
of all the things he preaches a good police dogs needs, small size, cleanliness and less aggressive during transport is not on the priority list...

I have just come across this thread and I find it very sad. I can't say that I am a great fan of pit bulls, in fact if I was choosing for myself it would be a border collie or a Shetland sheep dog. However, there is a pit bull that has his head on my foot right now. He is not my dog but he is like a shadow, I move – he moves. I will defy anyone to find any dog of any breed that is more gentle than this one. Or for that matter the 16 that my friend has – he breeds them. This dog belongs to my son but will have nothing to do with my son – well he will let him pet him, feed him but will not hang out with him. He is always with me. The children crawl all over him and he will eventually get out of their way but never growl or show any aggression.

There are three other breeds that I am much more fearful of than I am the pit bull. The Dobermans for one. When I was young my friend was attacked by a Doberman and almost died, he will carry the scars for his entire life. Do a Google search on any breed and you will find where they have turned on their owners and they are other breeds that can do just as much harm. Any dog of any breed that shows aggression toward its owner should be dealt with. By dealt with, I mean training and yes, as a last resort put down.

Although I find this dog very loving I am not that fond of it, it is ugly. To me, all pit bulls are ugly but that is a personal thing. I'm certain that in time I will come to care about the dog because it seems to care about me – but dang, that thing is ugly.

lol you have had 4 dogs so far? what the fuck happens to them?

two at a time... they eventually die of old age, that's what happens to them :hmm:

owning a couple dogs and talking to a dog trainer is hardly a big knowledge base. My father used to train dobermans and shepherds for the military. I am at dog parks everyday and about 4 times on the weekends. I have worked in a busy veternary practive through my education. Pit bulls are simply good front pages/newsflash things. Just look at how many local papers carry bite stories when a pitbull is behind them that happened 100s of miles away.

If you actually read the article and even do your own research you will see why the police are taking on more and more pit bulls.

Keep in mind the 'real' pit bull is about 50-60lbs. Most out there are mixed with rotts and other large dogs for size and usually aggression.

Also the American Bulldog often gets throw into this fiasco...

I don't really like pit bulls as far as looks, but at least I am knowledgable.

Poodles can be pretty aggressive.

owning 4 dogs (different breeds) and then training with them in a dog club ( don't know what you would call it in english) at least twice a week does give you some knowledge about dogs...

your "article" is just an interview with a person that describes herself as a pitbull nut... I'm not gonna base any conclusions on obviously biased sources, something it appears you have already done.

I know how big a pit bull is, that's why I called the breed "not very large"... are you mentally challenged or do you just copy paste arguments from elsewhere? I can do personal attacks, me.

I'm not sure why the american Bulldog is relevant to the conversation.

with all that said, you're just trying to discredit me rather than my arguments, why is that?:whiste:
