Yet Another Opteron 939 Thread

Hi Everyone,

I am writing an article about Socket 939 Opterons. Can anyone who has a 939 Opteron post their CPU and motherboard here? If you have a problem getting them to work, please also post your info in bold so I can see it really easily.

Thanks!

Kristopher

I have an Opteron 170 and an ASRock 939Dual-SATA2 - but I'm waiting on the backplate so I can't mount my heatsink yet (and thus can't do anything else yet of course) 😱

I'll be sure to update when I have it up and running 🙂

I've tested:

opteron 148
opteron 146
opteron 146
opteron 146
opteron 146
opteron 146

all with dfi ultra-d (modded to sli-d)

no problems with any chips except the 3rd opteron 146. For some reason that chip wouldnt boot up the first time with 2x1 gig crucial ballistix. i had to switch in another opteron and then switch it out again before it would work.

Have the Opty 146 on a MSI Neo 2-F(all parts below) had no problems whatsoever. Not sure if its a memory/mobo thing or the Opty's memory controller but when I get up past 290 HTT its hard to get decent memory timings stable even when using the 133 divider and 2T.

Opteron 165 on MSI K8-Neo2 Platinum. Running without a problem, 1.B bios worked fine, using a modded one now for the 150 divider. Other specs as below.

Hey PhatoseAlpha could you point me to the beta bios that you are using? I've been dying here with the 133 divider as my ram can't do the speed required for the 166 divider. Any good tips/locations on a good bios for the Neo2's would be awesome!!

Opteron 170@2600 on Chaintech VNF4-utra

Had to upgrade bios to v 5.0, no problems before, just didn't see 2 cores.

Opteron 165@2.5, MSI Neo2 Platinum, had to update to a newer Bios to be able to see both cores, not a single problem. using Bios W7025NMS V1.CB3

Opteron 170 on the EVGA SLI Motherboard .
Model 133-K8-NF41 , bios 4.2

I am very very 😀 with it.

All you need to know about my Opteron and its rig, Kris 🙂

Had no issues with the system recognizing and running the CPU 100% flawlessly. I'm using the 6/23 BIOS for my DFI.

Hey Kris,
I tried the Opteron 170 on both DFI NF4 SLI-DR (bios 623-2) and the new DFI NF4 SLI-DR EXPERT (shipping bios, 02/11/2005). Runs 100% on both.

Please don't forget to check if COOL AND QUIET (Powernow!) works for the Opteron DUAL CORE, there are a couple of posts with people not able to use it (including myself).
The same is valid on AMD Forums. Most people are not able to.

I had the Opteron installed with Bios 1014 and it showed AMD unkown CPU in the boot up screen, this did not hinder the overclock or any operation of the computer. I flashed the bios to 1015 and the board recognized the CPU.

Hey Madellga, how is the DFI Expert? Did you previously use an Ultra-D or SLI-D? If so, how do they compare?

Hi Avalon,

I bought one because a friend of mine wanted my rig - he has nor the time nor the knowledge to build one. I had to buy new components for me: mobo, PSU, CPU (the Opteron).

I decided to give a shot on the Expert, despite the lack of reviews.

I think you are aware that the layout has changed a bit - memory, CPU position - and the PCIex for the video cards are further apart. I didn't see any problems with that. Also SLI works jumperless, but I don't have SLI - no really useful at the moment.

What I can tell you? I installed everything, copied the bios settings from the "older" DFI (there are some new additional settings) and just gave the first try. Windows XP Pro SP2 loaded normally, didn't need to reinstall anything but had to re-activate Windows - which is really a pain in the neck. Had to read the 8 x 6 keys over the tel to the automated bot (internet didn't work), had to repeat again to a real person, explain why I had to activate my Windows again, where I bought it, my underwear color etc etc etc. After 5 minutes, I got the activation key again. Next time I will go with Corp. Copy :disgust:

Back on topic, on my San Diego 3700 I was able to get an extra 100MHz with the Expert (2.8 instead of 2.7 GHz). With the Opteron, I an stuck with 2.6GHz (2.7 didn't work and I didn't try anything between). But I think it is running with a bit less voltage (BIOS options have different values).

Overall, I recommend the new Expert mobo for someone building a new system, but it does not justify you selling your mobo just to upgrade - unless you can easily sell to a friend like I did.

I also didn't have time to tweak the board, DFI Street Forums are a bit slow on this mobo(Angry Games had some sort of problems with DFI staff - some noobs complained about him). I think it has potential to do a bit better but we need to see some reviews from AT or other competent people.

I heard this mobo can do also 4 memory banks with 1T@200MHz, but I don't have the sticks to try. My friend will come near Xmas and will bring his RAM, which is the same as mine. I will try the 1T then.

If you want, I can create a thread and post some pictures. Let me know 😉

My 146 should arrive some time next week. I'll be using it on my existing A8V board for about a month (I want a DFI but won't be able to use it without a PCIE video card, and I'm waiting for the prices of the new high end video cards to fall a bit), so I will probably be limited to around 2.6ghz for now. From what I've seen on other forums, this board works with Opterons starting from the 1013 BIOS and supports CnQ on them with the latest 1016.002 BIOS. I'll edit this post with more info once I have it running.

Opteron 165, Thermaltake SilentBoost
DFI Infinity NF4-Ultra
2x 1GB PC3200 GEIL Value Ram Rated 3-4-4-8
Sapphire GTO2 - Unlocked, 540/600
Enermax Whisper 465- 430Watt PS
WD 250JB ATA100 OS Drive
Windows XP64

No problems getting the rig to work.
Running the following settings: 256x9 = 2300Mhz, 1.375v | Memory: 6/5 divider (211mhz) 2.5-3-3-7 T1, 2.8v
C-n-Q will NOT work in XP64, even with latest Bios and drivers
Having issues pushing the FSB above ~260, possibly issues with dividers, etc.
