w00t! I got a new job!

It's contract but it's something, art direction position at a firm downtown in Toronto, pretty excited! I go in tomorrow to sort out the details. Now I need to cancel my EI application 😕

Well after nearly 2 years I've been axed
It doesn't come as any surprise, my team was down to a skeleton crew with 0 work coming in, 2 layoffs from a team of about 10 yesterday, I was the last today.
Not a bad run though, I've certainly learned an incredible amount, as I took this job straight out of school.
Any advice for me? I'm not even really sure what to do now, aside from take a couple days to chill out. I know I need to go apply for Employment Insurance, but even that is entirely foreign to me. I'm in Ontario, so there will be a lot of people applying these days.

Ah ouch Sabot, Ontario isn't getting as hard hit as some other people. What is your field?

(I hope its not graphic design cause there is like no work for that in Ontario I have at least 5 friends looking right now 🙁 )
 
a local excavating company, whom i have worked for before, but is also a family friend, who used to dig basements for houses, is now completely dead, has no work, anywhere... he has begun doing woodworking in a 10k sq ft garage, has begun painting stuff, such as school buses, anything for work... It is going to get bad.

It's design indeed, I have a pretty good freelance flow, and the weight of the work that's left is going to shift that way for the next little while I think.

Might be time to go back to school!

It's design indeed, I have a pretty good freelance flow, and the weight of the work that's left is going to shift that way for the next little while I think.

Might be time to go back to school!

I would think so. I mean, obviously look if you want too, but me and some friends have seriously been looking for work for them for 6 months. Most of them stayed in school and are going after another major. The field is so over saturated in Ontario.

If you have freelance going you are already ahead of the curve pretty nicely compared to the 200-1000 Graphic Artists graduates being pumped out every year from the colleges.

Sorry to hear that again man, I'd buy ya a :beer: if you were closer.

I totally agree with you, it's a very over-saturated field, I've got a few opportunities that have been popping up this year to keep me busy for a bit. Appreciate the phantom beer :beer:😀
 
Spent 2 months unemployed. I know the feeling. Im sorry.

I was JUST re-called back to my job after 2months, but my paycheck job is going to be stolen because i owe union dues for 2 months. SOB's.

I'm thinking of going back to school actually, but not for a masters in design. I think it might be a good time to seriously look into it, hopefully while I'm in there this recession thing will blow over.
 
Sorry to hear this. I hope you've got a decent place to live while the UI kicks in. I would guess Canada takes care of the unemployed in a manner better than we do here in the US.

Yes, I believe so, I have to look into this now. I know there is EI I just have to work out how to go about getting it.

Don't put it off. Here in California, there is a two week "waiting" period one must get past before ANY benefits are paid.

Same in Canuckland., but you get backpay to that 2 week period no matter when you apply.
 
My uncle in Burlington got laid off too before Christmas. Took him a little over a month to find a new job.

He was in QA for a manufacturing company

get the website done, I think it's helpful with your freelancing and can prob have something to show for the new job.
 
..if you have electronic/electro/mechanical skills check out your local mass transportation carrier. Busses/trains/LRV's street cars all need lots of maintaince.

wait so there billing you for the time you got laid off and not working?

Does this make sense? Or was the union paying you while you were unemployed?
 
Sucks for you. My brother just got laid off last Thursday from the company doing the GM proving ground project here in Arizona. I guess they don't have any more work coming in until later in the fall but he's not going to wait around. I myself haven't been able to find any work now for a year. Good luck.

My union dues went on while I was on the out-of-work list. IF you were unemployed more than x number of days, you could request "out-of-work" dues, which was half-dues for the month you worked less than 24 hours.
What I did was different than most of ATOT though. We use an exclusive hiring hall. If you're out of work, you register on the list...they call you when a job comes open.
IIRC, the longest I sat on the list was about 8 weeks...and it was because I screened the calls from the hall so I didn't have to go out. I'd been working 7-12's for over 6 months and wanted some time off.

In twisted's case, I'm kind of surprised that dues are payable for time out of work.
