Yet another game canned due to politics...

For a publisher to say "the game lives up to neither our quality requirements nor the fans' expectations" it must stink as badly as most movie tie-in games.

They should take the license elsewhere.
There's so much scope for a Stargate game, and mods to it as well.
Maybe an Unreal Engine 3 game.

The Stargate universe, and SG:Atlantis universe have a lot of potential for FPS, strategy, and RPG genres. But I'd rather they do it right, if two publishers have pulled out, the game probably wasn't any good.

This game has been in development for quite a while now. I was surprised, as an FPS based on the Unreal (don't know which version) engine... not what I was expecting. But the alpha testers seemed QUITE pleased with it. So I don't think it sucked as bad as most would think.

I could see a weak FPS wowing alpha testers because of the graphics and the fun of being in the SG-1 universe, but not being good enough to sell because they couldn't come up with enough gameplay variation for a full game.

Sadly we'll never know.

they should try a squad based game a la' UFO: Aftermath or Xcom. That would be great.
 that could be excellent. The X-Com 1 design of missions (to worlds instead of cities) and ongoing research could work well.

... but if done isometric turn-based it probably wouldn't make enough money 🙁

I've never understood the low expectations of so many TV viewers. Other than a mere handfull of episodes, ToST was hackneyed, trite, low-grade fantasy, not decent SF. But the fans keep coming back for another remake of the same minmal scheme, such as both of the Star Gate series.

It seems to me, pardon my preference for real SF, that any game below the standards of shows in that vein would have to be really low. Again, it's my opinion, and I have a great set of flame proof long johns.

:disgust:

Or do real time like UFO: Aftermath does. It is much faster way to play/pickup. And make the game look good!

I'll have to disagree on the writing for SG-1, at least for the first 5 seasons. They did a respectable job of universe building, with good character development and continuity over the years.

And I do know my "real" SF, from E.E. "Doc" Smith to Stephen Baxter with a few hundred other SF novels in between.

I for one LOVE the Stargate series, but I do agree that if the game was only seeming to be so-so, I'd rather not see it released at all.

Maybe MGM should fix it and distribute it free. Would make for good advertising. They could put a copy in their DVD box sets, for those that don't have broadband.
