So after the first one came to my email, I brought it to him and essentially said:

"Look man, you can't be doing this. It's my name on the account and it's my ass on the line. So please don't go downloading movies."

"Well alright - but I never downloaded anything."

Right.

So today, I get another letter from them via USPS stating the same thing. Now, I know much better then to download a movie or tv show via torrents but seemingly, he doesn't. I called him tonight and got a full blown denial - so I'm not exactly sure what I'm going to do here. I guess I could go and check his machine to see if it's on there (Quantum of Solace was the offending film) but I don't want to snoop 🙁
 
If it's in your name and he's doing illegal shit then don't let him use your internet access.
 
Yea, dude limit that shit stat. What router you have? He should pay for his own internet connection with his name if he wants to download. You have told him to stop and he has not. Do you have a wireless network? if yes is it password protected?

Ok, here is what you do... UNPLUG HIM FROM THE INTERNET! if it is wireless, then put up a WPA password that he doesn't know. Tell him to die in a fire! If he wants internet he will have to get verizon wi-fi stuff... or whatever. Tell him until he cleans up his act, he gets no internet.

also I think you could use a program like uhm.. Cain and Abel then ethernet or whatever that program is called now to look at web history. 😛 (It'll show things like torrents too) So if he keeps doing it, you just search through this and you'll see he has been going to thepiratebay and downloading stuf.f
 
Cancel your internet and have him pay for it instead if he wants to download crap?

Teach him how to pirate properly?
 
It's simple really. Tell him to cut the bullshit and stop downloading shit illegally. Tell him that if he does it again, you're cutting him off from the internet and if he wants it back, he can pay for the whole damn thing himself.
 
If you have a wireless router, is it possible a neighbor is leeching your internet?

If not, and you're 100% sure your roommate is doing the downloading, I'd just cut off his internet until he straightens up. Block his MAC address in the router config.

I like this idea. Set a router username/password that he doesn't know, and block his MAC address. Simplest and most effective solution given your situation IMO.

There's nothing simple about causing friction with the people you're living with. First you need to confirm that he is in fact guilty. I'm not sure how to go about that so someone here will come up with something.

An even better idea actually,

Is to say the internet is getting unplugged on a specific date ( tell him a date) then tell it its because the ISP kept sending letters and I did not obey them so now they are shutting me down and are going to investigate me.

or something like that I am sure you can think of something.

Also possible. Too many variables I suppose... though the situation does sound a bit fishy.
 
To all those who are suggesting changing un/pw or wireless key or filter MAC address, please be aware that since it is his roommate doing the deed, his roommate has physical access to the router and a hard reset will reset the router to its default settings (now only if his roommate is smart enough to figure that out but if he was, he wouldnt be downloading movies from easily traceable sources 😉 )

Over something trivial I'd agree, but this kind of crap could get OP in legal trouble. I wouldn't have any tolerance for this if it was my name on the account.

If OP wanted to be more diplomatic about it, he could introduce his friend to Rapidshare Premium or Giganews. At least this way he's much less likely to get caught.
