Jschmuck2, it's very simple either you want to do something about this or not.

It is YOUR name that the notices came to....and YOU say you are not downloading the material so that only leave your roommate or some mystery person via wireless.

Step one either secure your wireless better or disable it completely.

Tell your roomie that if it happens a 3rd time he's cut off...period.

The notifications are coming to you, in your name so you will have to deal with the consequences.

A good roomie would not leave you hanging.

It's time to shit or get off the pot.

You need to put the cable bill in his name. Bonus is that you'll probably get a new subscriber discount anyway.

If he is the one doing it there won't be a good way to stop him.

Also, roommates suck.

Install DD-WRT on your router (if supported).
Use it's built-in P2P blocking to block all P2P.

You could also just turn on logging on the router and check to see where the IPs are coming from. If it's a lot of individual persons, then it's P2P.

I've turned on the QoS settings in Tomato (I'm running a WRT54GL) so we'll see where that gets me.

Tomato lets you block p2p as well (IPP2P). You can also block specific websites, just go down the list of torrent websites (which you could find which ones he uses from the router logs) and block those. It's not 100%, but probably good enough.

Also, you can change your router to use OpenDNS DNS servers instead of your ISP's. I believe if you create a (free) account with OpenDNS, they'll let you block P2P sites.

That's a great fucking movie...

Blocking to HTTP only won't solve your problem. Get a router that supports DD-WRT. Much more configurable. You can block protocols, such as bittorrent, limewire, etc. I have the WRT-54G and I share my 'net with a guy down stairs (he's an aspiring A+ student, and he pays me a little for my comcrap). QOS go for me, and I block all protocols but IMAP, POP, and web access. Other than that, he's locked DOWN!

Do the same.

Tell your roommate that if he's gonna get you banned for pirating movies, try not to get you banned for something stupid like Quantum of Solace. 😛

It's in your name. Do whatever you want. If your roommate is downloading stuff that he shouldn't be, he's also aware that it's in your name and he's doing whatever he wants too.

If I were in your place. I'd shut it down ASAP. I don't have much free time to deal with legal hassle if that's what it comes down to. Especially for things I know I'm not doing. Have him open an account and you pay half.

1. change the bill to his name
2. download lots of illegal stuff
3. wait for letter to be sent to him
4. deny everything when he confronts you
5. profit!
